Hi Nige,
The tyres are 825R16 with a "normal" zig-zag pattern tread. I had a quich look at the Italeri trailer tyres, and they are not too far off, so I may go that route...
The wheels look to be fairly standard Land Rover style 6 stud pressed steel wheels with 16" rims. I may use the wheels from the KFS 1/2 ton trailer Mk2,which look to be of the same pattern.
Cheers
Steve

Now that my new chum Nige has provided loads of photos of the underside of the trailer, I can carry on with the chassis build (seems strange adding the structure after the super-structure, but I guess that's modelling). I do have a bit of a problem though, and that is understanding how the trailing arm suspension components look - I can see how they work, but can't see exactly what they look like. Still, tomorrow evening I'm going for an early Christmas dinner with some of the guys from GKN Sankey, who manufactured the trailer in the 80s, and I'm taking Nige's photos with me...
If, in the meantime, anyone can shed light on the "gubbins" underneath the trailer, I would be grateful.
Cheers
Steve

Hi Steve
I have posted up some pics on Facebook Military Vehicle Scrapbook which hopefully will give you a much better idea. Sourced a damned good chassis pic off an Evil Bay advert which shows the chassis on its own from the front !!!!!!!!!
I am sure the suspension for this trailer is torsion bar, similar to tank suspension !!!
I have also put a shout out for further help on Facebook on your behalf, and already got offers of help from Andy Trimmer, who I knew would likely have the know how !!!!!!!
Looking forward to seeing you get this one on the end of that fantastic Bedford !!!!!!!!
I want one !!!!!!!!!
All the best
Nige

Hi Nige, Very many thanks for your help. Unfortunately, I think that the chassis shown in your pics from eBay is the wrong model/variant, as it looks to be made from tube, rather than H section and channel. The variant shown in most of your photos (and the one I'm building) looks to be one made by GKN Sankey, but I know that they were also made by Reynolds Boughton, Universal Engineering, Arrows Equipment and a couple of others. I've just about worked out the suspension geometry, but want to get if confirmed tonight by the engineering guys from GKN Sankey. I will post something tomorrow, over-indulgence permitting! Cheers Steve

I've now started to build the trailer suspension, thanks to Nige! However, progress has been slowed due to "man-flu".... The two circular "things" will become the hydraulic brake drums, once the rest of the torsion bar suspension is completed.

Should have added that my Christmas dinner friends from GKN Sankey from the weekend were as much use as t*ts on a fish when it came to the trailer - all far too young!

The rod that runs over the top of the torsion tube is part of the hydraulic overrun brake system, and is currently only push fitted, as there are a few more bits to be added yet. The ends of the rod will be connected to the brake drums using tinned copper wire, once I am a bit further along.

Nige,
No, no joy yet with wheels and tyres. I've got the KFS 1/2 ton trailer on order, which will provide two wheels and maybe the tyres (if they're near enough in size), but that still leaves me one short for the spare....

It might be worth having a personal chat with Howard to see if you can purchase enough separate tyres for your work if they are indeed the right size.
Do you have the wheel and tyre sizes to compare?

Nige,
The wheels are 16" Land Rover style pressed steel (16.93mm scale diameter) and the tyres are 825R16 14 ply, which is somewhere between 34.38mm and 36.20mm scale diameter.

Steve The closest I have in my tyre stash are these two vinyl ones with a very soft zig zag tread. 33mm outside diameter 22mm inside diameter 8mm width I still have my Sanky 3/4 T trailer shod with the resin bar grip tread of the landrover kits which does not look right. Whilst the outside diameter would work for this, I would have to pad out the wheel diameter and blend with the vinyl to give it the correct relationship of tyre wall profile. The Esci wheels only measure 18mm rim diameter max. I have no casting set up as yet to make copies. Do you, if they were of any use as a basis for alterations? I will be attempting casting of the Bedford wheels, but that will defo be into the new year when I can afford the materials. Nige

Nige, your mate Andy Trimmer has posted some cracking photos of the suspension detail on Facebook. Thanks for asking him if he could help!
Cheers Steve
