I'll leap in with both feet!
The first one seems to be an appeal. They may not have co-ordinated their left and right hands to get in touch with the IPMS or other model clubs. Daft really, especially as they hold a model show there every year.
Now the second one is the more interesting ... (IMHO)
Model Engineers - now that's the interesting phrase.
For those that don't know, I own and run a small company which sells castings to folk who want to build particular live steam models. These range from 3" (quarter scale) to 6" (half scale) in size. My customers call themselves model engineers, and produce working models of engines which you will see at most (if not all) steam rallies.
There are folk in this bracket who look down their noses at what I call Plastic Scale Modellers. Not all though, thankfully.
I went to the show they are talking about, last year, and was pleasantly surprised to see the amount of plastic models on display. But I think I was probably in the minority of people associated with steam models. In fact I have seen some quite cutting remarks on one forum I belong to. The two are very different in their aims/methods/achievement - we make static models, theirs mostly will be working models.
Now, having established (in my mind at least!) that the two are very different hobbies, perhaps the real problem is that no-one has explained that to the 'established press' and basically it's just a story.
