Just setting out my stall, so to speak, and showing what can be done with that 50+ year old kit. I think it says a lot about how good they were to start with, when you can still do stuff like this.
Although typically of me, I converted the AEC, correct for WW2, into a postwar variant, and the QL, correct for postwar, into a WW2 variant.
first:
AEC 0854, 6x6, 2500gal Refueller
converted to a Mk4, a postwar variant, which lasted well into the 60's, and shown as 27AD39 circa 1955.
I added the pump flilter units, booms and pipework. Moved the searchlight to the front of the cab.
Both the rear and front mudguards were thinned down, fairleads added to the front, and changed the towhooks to a more correct drawerbar fitting. I added front higher level windows and rear quarterlights to the cab.
The wheels were Friendship Models examples, and the colour scheme was Humbrol 112, with a splash of light grey and golden yellow. The standard Airfix colour H96 is actually the RAF uniform colour- too light for vehicles. The tyres and hoses were painted tyre black (made from Humbrol Satin Black with Panzer grey added), the hoses were all made from solder wire.
Now:
Bedford QL 1000gal Refuller
This I completed as a WW2 example: 2TAF northern France, late 44.
As you can see, removed the booms and added the correct fittings for a Butterfields 1000gal tank
I thinned down the mudguards, added various lockers and filler units. The hose was from solder wire. The underscale Airfix tyres were replaced with ones from the airfix Matador gun tractor kit.
Painted in the late war SCC15 Olive-drab and SCC14 Blue-Black scheme, with a darkish (don't like too dark a wash in this scale-makes the model too dark) wash then artists pastels dusted over to give that well-used forward airstrip look.
