Just finished spraying a larger kit, a 1:48 M10 tank destroyer, using the tyre to power the airbrush. It has done a reasonable job, but I had to pump the tyre up seven times whilst doing it, so left me a little tired.
It was worth a try, but I think I will have to succumb to looking for a proper compressor some time in the near future.

Finally capitulated and got myself a compressor at the weekend. Ah, pressurised air on tap .. what a luxury. The tyre was a good experiment, and definately a cost effective alternative to pressurised cans, but for anything more than occasional use I've concluded that a compressor is pretty much essential. I only went for a cheap-ish one from Modelzone, but it seems fine and has plenty of (variable) pressure.
The spare tyre and pump have gone back to the garage now, much to the missus' relief.
