I'm back to modelling after a 20 year break. I just bought an Iwata Eclipse airbrush and wondered what peoples thoughts were on using acrylics, Vallejo airbrush colours especially. I keep hearing about acrylics being hard to spray etc. The Eclipse I have sprays down to .35mm, so not ultra fine I guess, but fine enough for me. Any views or experiences airbrushing Vallejo?

I use their metallics on engines and such like. Took a little while to get adjusted to the thinning ratios but I'm comfortable now and they look splendid.

Ay up Ian,
Any problems with masking on that stuff ? And what do you use as a base coat ?
Cheers,
Haydn.

Haydn, I'll be experimenting over the next week with my new airbrush and the Vallejo paints, so I'll post back findings on masking etc! I also picked up some Alclad at SMW 2006, which I suspect you will all tell me is the best for natural metal finish. This is like a voyage of re-disovery for me after so many years away! Terry

this thread is 'bout a month old, but i'm new here and would like to offer some generalities that have helped me make the transition from spraying enamals to spraying acrylics (exclusively)....... i think the Golden rule that has eliminated alot of my frustrations with acrylics is mixing all color combinations the consistency of milk.......be it 50/50, 70/30 or 60/40...... adjust the compressor pressure to accomodate that milky consistency so the paint settles on the object looking wet without being overwhelming.........while simultaneously adjusting the spray distance to achieve an even coverage of said object........ also, if at all possible, use the thinner that is recommended. i use Tamiya, Xtracrylics, Vallejo, Model Master Acryl (pouch and bottle) and Gunze Sangeo, all of which has taken some adjustment due to their quick drying nature and adhesion properties........... in all, it's really patience, practice and perseverence.
