Hi,
I have just completed the 'klear' stage of my model, where the decals have been sealed, and all looks groovy. It really is a gift for getting a great paint finish.
However, the current sheen is a litle too pronounced on a 1:72 model and so I'm keen to matt it.
Many years ago (well over a decade, before returning to the hobby this summer), I used Humbrol matt and was never very happy with the results - whether or not it was due to a lack of preparation, there was a danger of a degree of opacity.
So, any recommendations from out there? Is there any best-finish to apply on top of Klear? I'd prefer to use acrylic if possible. I'll be using a brush (no airbrush) so that may be a consideration.
Many thanks, Andrew

Hi Andrew go for Xtracrylix Flat Varnish its great stuff Fired out of the Airbrush you can see it dulling down as it dries Now if Paintbrush is your thing dry brush it on comes out dull as hell The Humbrol stuff is Rubbish except there paints of course

The matt you're referring to might've been the Humbrol Matt Varnish. Whilst okay, this can be easily bettered by Humbrol Mattcote. Mattcote does exactly what it says on the jar and will not go yellow over time. It does tend to settle in the pot, with a thick gloop forming at the bottom of the jar, but some good stirring and shaking will sort it out. I also find that it can be brushed on with a hairy stick and not leave streaks. It's an excellent product, in my opinion...well recommended.
Regards, Bruce

Some good ideas there, thanks chaps.
I've sniffed around a few sites online this evening and see that several people have recommended adding Tamiya Flat Coat to Klear, on a c 1:5 ratio.... I may give that a go, as the Klear is really smooth, and I'm a bit afeared of appying an enamel on top of Klear.
I'd thought the Tamiya Flat was a varnish, turns out it's a flatting agent to add to mixes.
Don't have an old crappy kit to try it on, so fingers-crossed.

I've never had problems applying enamel over Klear. That said, I don't think Mattcote is an enamel, which might be what makes it so especially useful. The beauty of using a product like Mattcote is that, provided you mix it thoroughly beforehand, you get consistent results. Matting down Klear might not be as easy, so I suggest you try it on something glossy beforehand. (Shiny cardboard, for example).

Tamiya Flat base X21 and Klear That is an excellent stuff to use I use it all the time but remember only DUST a layer on or it will end up flat as a pancake if it isn't Matte enough just dust another coat on. If you dust it on then you only wait a few second for it to dry off to see the result

Hi Sean, Merlin & Ted,
Cheers for the suggsestions here - I ended up opting for the Klear-XF21 mix, it worked a charm. But why did I use Humbrol 30 on a stuka, Doh!

If you want an eggshell sheen - full matt is too matt for 1/72 & under, I reckon - try spraying Klear, lightly and from a good long way away. It's the exception to my rule that my "proper" airbrush won't work on anything! Cheers, Bri.

i have given up on kleer as i have had a few problems with it .ie the the humbrol matt coat reacted with the kleer.i have now gone over to micro gloss and micro flat .that is great stuff. it goes on a treat with an airbrush and it dont go off yellow like some of the other products i have tried over the years.

I've been trying to matt finish a couple of vehicles and some figures, using Humbrol's matt varnish from an aerosol can. It gives good coverage and a nice matt finish but has left nasty white deposits in one or two places which is requiring a lot of re-work. I found that a layer too thick left the worst deposits in corners and crevices, thinnest possible coats seem to be the best but too thin leaves a speckling effect, it's difficult to get right and I'm still experimenting with it at the moment. I have a can of satin too, which doesn't seem to have this problem.
