I obviously missed the gratuitous picture. Anyhoo getting back to the subject in hand - I have bought myself a selection of vallejo acrylics and Games Master acrylics and going to give them a go - will try the oils later when my bank balance has recovered. I think the mortgage is due soon.
If I can I shall post a picture of my efforts on here and open it up to full and frank scrutiny - I can take it!

I have obtained a couple pots of Games Workshop flesh, Dwarf I think and a bottle of the Vallejo 'medium flesh' so I shall have a go at using both on the two figures I have. Had a bit of a false start with the black SS uniform and am having to strip the paint off to start again, humbrol matt black suddenly became very glossy for some reason.
Anyway - once I have done the heads I shall post a pic to guage your reaction.

John John I am merely trying to make a decent fist of completing a couple of 1/35 SS Tank crew to go with a Stug 3 thats also near completion. The Stug has come on really well and am totally impressed with my efforts so far, just didn't want to completely mess it up with a couple of cartoon tank crew. Paul

Ok - Had a go with the Vallejo Acrylics and it looks pretty good irl. I haven't detailed the eyes yet as well to be honest its 1/35 and d**n small - dont want a clown in uniform, but the photo really emphasises that the eyes have not been done. Anyway - I would be grateful for your comments - not bad for a first go I think and as I say it does look better in real life - not sure what the off white all down one side is!! And I haven't done the hair yet - thats just primer with black dry brushed - needs more work yet, but I think I have managed to darken the recesses and highlight the ridges in a fairly satisfactory way. As I said please feel free to comment. By the way the figure is eating which is why his cheeks are puffed out!! Paul

Looks like a decent base colour Subtle variations help bring the model to life - less is more - so easy on the washes/drybrushing ;D

I have painted a few figures, and aerosol car primers in grey or white are fine, provided they are not applied too heavily. Most of these primers these days are acrylic based, so dry quite quickly. Cellulose based aerosol primers also dry fast but are rarely seen if at all now. Airbrushing matt white or grey paints will also give a good fine undercoat finish. Regarding brush painting, acrylics are very good for putting base coats on as they dry fast. Detailing and shading can be done either with light washes of acrylics or alternatively by using oils for blending and shading. Oils on acrylics are ok but not recommended the other way around.

FYI. Games Workshop (Citadel) paints have recently undergone a change in recipe, accompanied by a complete renaming of the range. I am told that the new formula 'goes on' better than the old. I remember four flesh tones. I used Elf Flesh for the pale skin of women, and Bronzed Flesh for men, (including Wallace, you might have seen him on the Beyond the Box stand). A few years ago I portrayed Wallace as the A-team's Mr T, for which I used Dark Flesh. Dwarf Flesh is what I use for the pigs (from Shaun the Sheep series): it is darker than normal pink, with a slight brownish tinge. Without looking up the new paint chart, I don't know the new names.
