Just an observation. A week or two ago I got onto the IPMS USA website and found out that their forum is strictly limited to their members only, as they consider it to be one of their paid up privileges. Even IPMS members from other countries do not have access to it at present. I contacted them to suggest that they might allow overseas IPMS branch members access also. Whilst doing this I mentioned that our forum has open access and is a good tool for 'selling' IPMS.

no I'm not a member again...yet. but I was....and will be again. Interesting comments about this forum being open to non-members and well as members....if it was members only I wouldnt be here. So yeah keep it for everybody and anybody - like somebody said, it might bring people into the fold. Or back into it As to the comment about people not posting...par for the course, there will always be folks who just read but dont say much - live with it ;D me....I babble on relentlessly....

Hmmm.
Well it worked with your photo sizing Nick, so maybe a go at this might get more response and bring some of those 800 out of the woodwork.

Members and non-members are allowed to post on this board and always have been. However, due to problems in the past, guests may read the threads but are not allowed to post, to do that non-members are requested to register with this site, simple really, and it seems to keep everyone happy. There have been suggestions in the past and more recently to have an IPMS members only portion of the site, I'm considering this and looking into how it can be implemented.

Now that would appear elitist! Leave it as open access for all forum members - no IPMS members (like I was) can ignore the society business sections if they have no interest. Make it IPMS members only and they may think we are hiding something! Brian

Not in the least Brian mate.
I am a member of two forums which has a club members only thread(note Thread) and it works well, I feel that if someone wants to know about a club/organisation then they should have the decency to join and not bikker on the outside.
I would though make it only for IPMS meeting and relevant to the IPMS working, not the every day postings here on modeling subjects.
'Whew', have not voiced meself in a long time, 'don't it feel good!!! ;D

Now that would appear elitist! Leave it as open access for all forum members - no IPMS members (like I was) can ignore the society business sections if they have no interest. Make it IPMS members only and they may think we are hiding something! Brian Brian, the IPMS (USA) Website / Forum is a member only benefit, which means that any modeller other than IPMS (USA) members cannot access the site. I used to be an IPMS (USA) member and quite enjoyed the resource. But like most folks, I cut back on membership to paid forums and magazines. As this site is paid for by the IPMS (UK), its members have the right, should they insist, on a members only portion of this site accessed by a password. This is not elitist, rather an extension of a benefit. I could place items of news and Society notices which would have no interest to non members. The content of the forum would not change, I would simply remove from the general population of the site, items which are of no interest to non members, this would actually streamline the site and make it less cluttered. As I mentioned in an earlier post, I'm looking at alternatives which would dramatically change the look of the forum and web site, this would give members of the forum the opportunity to place personal blogs for example, or add their own gallery. When I took on the role of webmaster and forum administrator, I took on a requirement to search for and provide a resource for the Society, which provides value for money. I believe this forum is one of the friendliest on line, it also provides a much needed model resource, open to all modellers, not just IPMS members, and I have no plans to change that.

Perhaps I misunderstood your original posting and, if so, I apologise.
This forum is a credit to the IPMS and to those, like Nick, who put in the time and effort to set up and maintain it. I appreciate that the forum is paid for by IPMS (UK) and the members have a right to expect value for money. However, I can see no advantage to having the Society/Branch/SIG news as IPMS members only.
As you know, I have only recently been converted to join IPMS (I was a member at Wallingford Branch many years ago but didn't actually join the society). Part of my decision, apart from Wolfie twisting my arm up my back to join the Truck SIG, was reading through the Society information on here - particularly the SMW threads. These managed to convince me that the IPMS wasn't the self serving, bureaucratic home of rivet counting aircraft modellers I thought it was but was actually an open, friendly society for any real modeller.
If this Society information is hidden, I think it would do little to help change the perception of many modellers (particularly those who don't model aircraft). Obviously, IPMS members have the right to run the Society and this forum in any way they choose but we also have to consider that this forum is one of the major advertisements for the Society as far as non-members are concerned.

Back in the late 70's early 80's I was a member of the South Australian branch of the IPMS but as they where an elitist mob and if you didn't do either a plane or an AFV they weren't interested in what you made, I joined as a car builder and had a model of a Nascar racer at this meeting I was at, they then told me the car wasn't right I asked what was wrong with and they proceeded to tell me that this rivet was missing that bolt wasn't in the right place and so on, I asked what they new about cars full stop their answer was nothing so I said how can you judge something you know nothing about they said if I didn't like I could go so I did and I've never returned competed in comps or displayed my models since until a few years ago when I took part in a model display that was part of a hot rod show and I enjoyed it as there was no competition to be the best. So in short I will never join a fee paying club as I've lost out there as well and I;ll never take part in a comp until IPMS members in Australia can learn that there are people who are in the hobby for just that a hobby, if I want to build a car that is spot on I go back to work in the motor industry but that is not likely as I 60 yrs old and never want to work again.
