My second question what do i need to do to prepare the surface (the parts are plastic)? any advice would be appreciated.

Alclad II seems to be about the closest and easily available (Howard at KFS sells it so add it to your Fire engine order ;D). You need to paint the parts gloss black enamel (or Alclads' own black base) before over spraying with the Alclad. Looks pretty good to me ;D

Perry, truck fuel tank just done with Alclad Not perfect (the black needed a better finish but this will be weathered so won't be as noticable, especially when viewed at normal size!) but shows the shine Alclad gives! Andrew

AK Interactive has a full range of metallics including a chrome finish. It is for airbrush use like Alclad. Reading the AK flyer about their metallics, the majority of them can be used straight onto plastic with the exception of the chrome and polished aluminium that need a compatable primer. Some modellers I have spoken to rate the AK products highly.
