Why are the majority of model shows held on a Sunday? I have an idea that Saturday shows would be more popular. Read this and tell me what I'm missing... Public transport is more limited on a Sunday. Railways get repaired, bus services run a less often service. Roads are more congested on Sunday evening as people head home from the weekend. Shops are now open for shopping Sunday, no need to go out Saturday. We could go to distant events, stay overnight Saturday and enjoy a slow return Sunday, maybe visiting other places on the way home. Most venues are available on Saturday as well.

Why are the majority of model shows held on a Sunday? I have an idea that Saturday shows would be more popular. Read this and tell me what I'm missing... I think you've answered the post with your first line, ... the majority of shows are held on a Sunday, maybe Sunday is a better day to hold a model show? Ah, the age of the car. Your argument may be OK if the show is local, but what about shows across the country from where folks live. For instance, I'm contemplating travelling to Milton Keynes from Derby, that would be an interesting journey (and costly) if I didn't have my own transport. I don't know about where you live, but Saturday in Derby on public transport? ... no thank you. That's presuming all visitors to model shows are not shift workers where Saturday is a normal working day. I believe visiting shows and taking in an overnight stay may just be a pay packet too far for some folks. Apart from that, you're now contradicting your own point by suggesting travelling on a Sunday which would make the roads even more congested? Really, have you asked all the model show organisers if their particular venue is available on a Saturday? Sorry to be so negative Nick, but there are arguments for and against what you're saying. On a Saturday, it's family day for me, shopping and house chores. At the moment I'm installing a new cooker which went phut last Sunday and this is the first chance I've had to do anything about it. Milton Keynes for me tomorrow! ... by car. Further comments anyone?

Nick, I think you have covered the points there!
Of course, this all lists why the public may/ may not visit a Sunday show but I suppose the other side is the organisers/exhibitors who obviously have the ability/ time to organise a Sunday show easier than Saturday.
I can only guess that the Sunday shows have been done that way with some thought, rather than just a 'that's what I want' from an organiser. Perhaps visitor figures for a 2 day show would shed light on the popularity of each day?
Unfortunately the 'you can please some of the people' saying is relevant here, Nick why not start a show on a Saturday?

It's all very well considering only the visitors/exhibitors, but what about the organisers? Having spent several years with the Stoke Mandeville, then Halton, shows, I can assure you that it takes a hell of a sight longer to erect, and organise, 300-400 tables, than it does to break them down, and set them into piles of 50, or so. Have a show on Saturday, and the organisers can kiss goodbye to Friday, which means booking a day's holiday. For a show to start at 10a.m., exhibitors need to be on-site, parked, and ready, by 9.30, at the very latest. We had exhibitors travelling 100 miles, or more, using the M40, M4, M25, M1, and, on a Saturday morning, that means 2 hours travelling, so the car has to be packed on a Friday night (after a week at work,) and a 6-7.00a.m. start. Well, I think the point was well argued. My personal preferance is for Sunday, for the same reasons Nick has mentioned. Just for reference, if you like a Saturday show, Greater Peterborough Model Show is on Saturday March 6th at Peterborough town hall.
Regards, Steve.

Steve, any reasons for holding the show on a Saturday instead of a Sunday?

Salisbury show is always on a staurday, as we have to put all the exam tables back ( after taking all ours down) for school exams on the following day. never seems to affect the attending traders or vistors -not heard anything to suggest any problems with this arrangement. Yeovilton,s shows are always on Saturdays as well. rogerd

I suppose there is also a lot of competition on a Saturday as well (sporting events and the like) which makes Sunday more attractive for local shows. Got to admit the setup the day before is important too. Getting volunteers to take a days holiday for setting up SMW is difficult enough.
Cheers,
Rob M.

Steve, any reasons for holding the show on a Saturday instead of a Sunday? Nick, I'm not sure why P'boro is held on the Sat. May be something to do with the venue as the Town Hall is not open on Sunday and it would probably be unavailable due to staffing because of that. It is a nice venue though and having a show put on in the middle of a busy shopping precinct on a busy Saturday, sure brings in the crowds. Steve.

Nick, I'm not sure why P'boro is held on the Sat. I believe it's because the venue may be free?

Well, that sounds like a bargain! I must say, I do enjoy P'boro even though I am secretly missing doing the housework (SWMBO works on Saturday's) lol

IIRC the Peterborough show is held on a Saturday as, as Nick has said, it is free, as the Mayor has his annual shindig the same weekend and it has something to do with the tables being in the right place at the right time!!!

How many shopowners want to close on a Saturday and hope that sales at a show will make up for the loss of a day's shop trading or pay the wages of someone to look after the shop while they're at the show? Cheers John
