In recent years I've used isopropyl alcohol to thin and clean brushes of acrylic paint (Tamiya or rattle can sprays). But its getting increasingly hard to get hold of and blooody expensive. I just paid nearly £11 for a half litre bottle So what else is there?

Isn't methylated spirit cheaper? It's alcohol made undrinkable by addition of methanol. It's cheap enough and I've been using it for years with no ill effects. NO! I've never drunk it, I prefer the real stuff ;D ;D ;D

Wolfie,
I've been using cheap car screenwash to thin Tamiya acrylics for some years - the 99p-for-a-litre bright blue stuff you get in Halfords, Wilkos etc.
Even works pretty well with white paint.
Also used it very successfully with Games Workshop acrylics.
Regards, John

I'm no chemist but a quick google shows:
They are not the same, isopropyl alcohol is a pure chemical substance or molecule, C3H8O, sometimes also known as Rubbing Alcohol.
Methylated Spirits (in the U.S.A Denatured alcohol) is ethanol that has additives to make it more poisonous or unpalatable, and thus, in theory undrinkable. In some cases it is also dyed.
Ethanol is the consumable variety of alcohol.
In terms of the price - IPA is produced by combining water and propene (propylene) which is a natural gas or oil derivative - and the rest as they say is history.
Trade prices (and we're talking the solvent industry) back in November were in the region of €1000/tonne, or €1/kg, or in rough terms £0.87/kg. At £22/L someone is taking the proverbial. Sorry I can't help (any more - have left that industry now) in trying to find a cost effective alternative.
Hope that helps? Rich

Hi,
I got some iso alcohol quite cheapy after doing a search for it on e-bay - so that might be worth a try.
I must say I'm intrigued by the idea of using screen wash.
Cheers,

... I must say I'm intrigued by the idea of using screen wash. Excelent stuff, been using it for years, and it cleans out my airbrush after use, best part about it is it's cheap.

Screenwash - I'd be a bit concerned about the detergents present for paint thinning (great for airbrush cleaning, though).
I've had success thinning acrylics (Tamiya, Vallejo, Rowney/Daler & GW) with own-brand Dishwasher Rinse Aid. It's got none of the detergents in it (and leaves a nice lemony smell to your paint job ;D).

My IPA doesn't work at all! Maybe it's because I am buying it at the Pub!
