Re Frakaplin's post. I think that the Airfix Vasa isn't too difficult to get hold of. I bought mine from Modelzone about 2 years ago. The Airfix sailing ships don't turn over too quickly in the model shops so maybe the best thing is to keep a lookout if you want the Airfix one. The new Revell Vasa kit was only released late last year so may be easier to obtain as it is current. There is a site named Scale Plastic and Rail that carries a good 'out of the box' review by a guy named James Hatch. Plenty of photos of the Revell kit parts on this site to peruse. You referred to drawings....Basically you will do no better than to obtain the Eva Marie Stolt drawings direct from the Vasa museum shop to refer to.

good evening. i am back to bore you!
I have closed up the ship and there were some minor fit issues. However superglue and swearing helped. I found the front of the main deck and top deck needed a little filler between the deck and the hull. could well be me though. Deck fitts so much better than the Airfix one which was moulded flat but in reality sweeps upwards to the rear. Biggest problem I had was dislodging the guns and them falling inside so I had to remove the top section of the stern to get them out. The joints at the stern are nicely hidden by the figures so thumbs up to Revell.
Currently working on the masts and yards and experimenting with colours. Information I have is that the yards were slushed (greased) so have come up with a grey/brown/ lightened shade. Will see what thet looks like in the morning. Managed to cut away the inside of the gammoning so leaving 'rope' effect but again I will see what that looks like in the morning.
Photos - OK. I took some yesterday then lost everything when I pressed the wrong button so if it is sunshine tomorrow (bound to be here in deepest darkest north of scotland!).
Dont know if anyone would be interested in photos of the Airfix Wasa during construction but I still have them I think.
Cheers

Will you be doing it in Stobbart Livery Nick? Just Joking! Noel Nope, it would be done as a serious(ish) build, that's if I ever open the box. Maybe I could be persuaded to sell it, could be in the 'Bring and Buy' at SMW?

Hi Frankaplin! Sorry about the typo! Didn't realise I dropped the 'n' until I saw your reply. Glad that my post may have been of help to you.
Also Hi Ken! I am still at the research stage with just the one unstarted kit (Airfix) at present. As you have built the Airfix one and building the Revell kit at present, which one do you think will make a better model, regardless of how much extra work it will involve? Or, despite the scale difference, does it look as though any of the Revell parts could be utilised to improve the Airfix kit? The more I look at my Airfix kit and photos of the real ship's carvings, I reckon that Airfix have done a really good job in this respect, considering the kit was first released in the 70's. When I looked at pictures of the new Revell kit carved parts in James Hatch's review in the Scale Plastic and Rail website, the definition did not look to be as good as the Airfix one, but maybe the photos were unsharp. Kind regards Noel Smith

Hi Frankaplin It might be an idea to get a look at both kits if you can. Overall the Revell one is probably the more accurate of the two as it is a brand new kit. Looking at the Eva Marie Stolt drawings the Airfix one will need a lot of work doing to it to make it more accurate. Although looking at James Hatch's review on the Scale Plastic and Rail site, my only critcism seeing the photos is that the definition of the ornamental carved work does not appear to be as sharp and crisp on the Revell kit as on the old Airfix kit. I have the Airfix one (unstarted) whilst doing the research at present and will probably buy the Revell one as well. There is a bit of difference in scales (Airfix 1/144th to Revell's 1/150th) but not a lot. So I will be looking at both to see if I can do a bit of cross kitting between the two or not. Both kits retail at about £25 to £28 each. Occassionally the Airfix kit turns up at model shows second hand so may be a lot less in cost if you see one. I am not really in a position to recommend one or the other just yet until I can get my hands on a Revell kit. Ken may be able to give you a better idea than me as he has been building both already. Cheers Kind regards Noel

Noel/Nick This is my third attempt to do this reply! My appologies for the late reply but \i have been very busy at work and also had a bereavement. Airfix statues are the better of the kits but overall the Revell kit is the superior one to build. I have found the articles I did and enclose in total. I meant to cut it down but never got round to it. Enjoy Attachments:

Good evening
I am currently working on the rigging. Revell drawing is a little different to Airfix one and probably the more accurate. I am doing more than the basic rigging but not as much as the advanced rigging. My advice is to leave off the main rigging untill the various single lines are done. I simplified the multiple lines which goes round the spritsail as I had about 3 attempts but did not like what I had done. Keeping the lines taut is also a problem. I have 1mm silk thread which after dying I use on the main diagonals (bottom of mast to top of next mast). I also have a limited amount of 0.6 and 0.3 line from the previous Airfix kit so they have also been used. To tie off a line, for example round a mast, I looped the line round the mast and brought the end into the thread and tied off twice with thinner thread. I applied a spot of superglue to the knot and when dry cut the loose threads off. A wee bit rough here and there but it is reasonably accurate.
I think I am now reasonably far through it to say that overall the Revell kit is far more buildable, more accurate in places (to be expected) and the rigging is definatly easier to install. There is also a lot less scratch building. Deck is overdone with huge lines between the timber boards. However the statues is definatly the weak point. In contrast the Airfix kit is a struggle in places and if you can get an old kit with the rigging already moulded (when first released the rigging was moulded in black simply cut to size but current kits have a rigging machine and thread and is not as good) then get this one. Statues was obviously a labour of love and is the highpoint of the Airfix kit.
I think some small parts can be interswapped but not the main parts such as the stern.
I should be finished for Perth if anyone is interested and I will see what I can do regards photos.
Regards
Ken
