I am converting over from enamels to acrylics & enjoying it. BUT, as Hannant's do their Xtracrylic armour colours as matt, I have to then gloss varnish AFV's in order to decal & apply washes. Question; How can I convert Xtracrylic matt paints to gloss? Would adding Xtracrylic gloss varnish to the paint before airbrushing work? Any advice gladly received.

Peter, I doubt whether mixing matte paint with glossy paint will make it glossy. IMHO the simplest way is to use Klear / Future (Pledge) - more than one coat if necessary. To avoid silvering, apply decals on a still wet patch of Klear and cover it with more Klear, a sort of "Klear-Decal-Klear" sandwich. More: www.swannysmodels.com/TheCompleteFuture.html

Peter, I use Klear over Vallejo Acrylics with no problems, however on odd occasions I do add Vallejo's gloss medium to the basic acrylic paint prior to spraying and this seems to work also. I tend to do this for smaller items where I dont want to then get the klear out again! I dont have any idea if Vallejo's Gloss Medium would work with Xtracrylics but who knows, it might! I also regularly use the klear-decal-klear sandwich that Seb mentions and it does work a treat.

I doubt whether mixing matte paint with glossy paint will make it glossy. It works, no problem, provide you use compatible media, although matt paints mixed with gloss media will probably not come out fully gloss. It's a trick you can use to avoid the sort of colour shift that can occur when gloss varnishing over matt paints. Klear should be miscible with a number of acrylic brands, although it may not be with spirit based acrylics such as those from Tamiya and Gunze. peebeep
