Welcome to a regular feature here, which I'm going to use to overcome 'Mag Lag' - as it unavoidably takes about two months from my first reporting of latest goings on, to seeing it it print. That could mean anything up to four months from the actual event to report. Even the Crimean War news was faster than that. ;D
For example, back in June I mentioned I'd like to see the Luftwaffe SIG reform. That's since happened, but it'll be October before you read about it in the mag.
So, you will see it here first - effectively an advance 'Branch and Country' column, which I'll post here at the same time as I send it to Don for inclusion in the mag.

Thankfully, just a short message from me this time, you’ll be glad to know. Firstly, a warm welcome to another new branch - Essex MAFVA. Any members in the Essex area – particularly those into the military modelling area can contact the Branch Secretary, Thomas Cromwell, 255 Stamford Rd, Dagenham, Essex RM9 4EJ, 07931 504904 – essexmafva@yahoo.co.uk. Kev Wilson has bravely taken on running the Luftwaffe SIG from Ian Day. Any members with an interest in this vast topic, including those previously involved with the SIG, are cordially invited to contact Kev. He plans for the SIG to cover a wide span, from the Luftstreitkräfte of the Red Baron, the Luftwaffe of the Third Reich, and through to the East German Luftstreitkräfte and modern day Luftwaffe. However, he does draw the line at those seeking precise information, eg, the exact RLM shades of the Bf109F werk no 5467 flown by Hans Joachim Marseille before breakfast on the 3rd Feb 1942. (That was actually painted during an expedient repair using discarded Italian paint stocks...) Kev can be contacted at 39 Chadwell Road, Leicester, LE3 6LG or email - kevrev827@hotmail.com. Once again, as another SIG leader’s interest moves on, another vacancy appears, as Kev will be winding down the Vietnam SIG, although it is planned that both displays will be appearing at Scale Modelworld. Another SIG Leader who has plenty else going on besides is my EC colleague, Membership Secretary Colin Marrow. He has now handed on the leadership of the Airfix Modelling SIG to Tom Weir - 46 Stoneswood Road, Delph, Saddleworth, Lancashire, OL3 5DY. E-Mail: tomweirdelph@yahoo.co.uk Website: airfixtributeforum.myfastforum.org/. Finally, the Aircraft Carrier SIG Leader, Martyn Denchfield, has found new moorings. He’s now securely tied up at 6 Waveney Grove, Clifton, York, YO30 6EQ.

Following on from SMW12, there have been a fair number of changes within Branches and SIGs, so here goes… Leadership of the Aerobatic Display Team SIG has reverted back to Gary Siddall, who can be contacted at 2B Victoria Road, Draycott, Derby DE72 3PS Email : garys@globalnet.co.uk Phone : 07974 919 814 www.aerobatic-teams.org.uk You have control, Gary – Smoke On – Go! … Steve Harper, of the Airport, Aerodromes and Airfields SIG has moved to 39 Oak Tree Close, St Ives, Cambs PE27 6UD. Phone remains unchanged at 01480 300815. Mike Chilestone has now set up a dedicated email address for the Recce SIG: IPMS-Recce-SIG@virginmedia.com . Always remember that time spent on Reconnaissance is seldom wasted… Gerry Carville is the new SIG Leader for the Aviation Ireland SIG. Gerry is at 2 Orchard Way Long Riston, East Riding, Yorkshire HU11 5FD. aviationirelandsig@hotmail.co.uk Those of you who actually read my SMW12 show report will remember that I reported Dave Halliday had gone into hiding with the stress of it all, and as part of setting up his new identity, he has advised the Branch formerly known as Riverside, is henceforth now Cheshire Modellers. (David Halliday 8 Halsall Close, Runcorn, Cheshire, WA7 6LT 01928 717057 david.halliday12@btinternet.com) The Racing and Record Aircraft SIG, winner of the best SIG display at SMW12, now has a new leader - Axel Van der Minne, Het Roege Bos 18, Groningen, 9745 DZ, Netherlands Telephone: +31 50 3129129 axelvanderminne@yahoo.com Website: www.ipmsairrace.org A forming SIG – Mediterranean Theatre of Operations has been proposed by Alec Smith.. Covering twenty years and 2200 miles from 1936 Spain, to 1956 Suez, and everything in between. Though I didn’t have much to do with it myself, (honest!) the MTO SIG was proposed as a spin-off from my very own SAAF SIG Desert War display theme by several of my Brampton club mates. But unless there’s wider support from beyond Brampton, this SIG will remain at the ‘forming’ stage... For more information contact Alec at 27 Manor Lane, Alconbury, Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, PE28 4EH 01480 896949 E-Mail: katana750@hotmail.co.uk Finally, it’s good to see that the (still nameless) branch that conducted their 2011 AGM in eleven minutes have since got their act together and achieved modest efficiency gains. For their 2012 AGM, they reported everything as being jolly well fine in just five minutes, so freeing up even more time to ponder their Telford purchases. It’s All Good. ;-) Happy New Year... Phil

Following a major photocopying and postal exercise, the Annual Return forms, with plenty else besides, was mailed out to all Branch Secretaries and SIG Leaders on 1 February. This package included revised Rules and Guidance for Branches and SIGs, updates mainly regarding insurance coverage for shows and meetings, and also making clear the need for all to respond promptly to enquiries. Public Liability cover notes were sent to Branches organising shows, and for those within reasonable travelling distance, requests for a table for an IPMS helpdesk (if not already confirmed), were also included. Completed Returns / SMW display bookings have started arriving back - always a good sign. I asked for slightly fuller details of membership lists this time, which has provoked some refreshing honesty: "There's some bloke called Fred lurking within the SIG, but I don’t actually know his surname. Would he kindly make himself known to me at the earliest opportunity." Another said - 'I see we claim about 35 members, but this is a bit like a situation report to Hitler circa mid April 1945 (Army Group Wieser now comprises Reg and the lad) - our more realistic strength is 8-10...” Everything appears quiet within the Branches, though there are some items of SIG News. From a
distant modelling
Galaxy, far far away,
a new hope has emerged… [/size] Over to Yoda: Being formed, a new Star Wars SIG is. Kev Green, the would-be SIG leader is, and looking to recruit IPMS members his display, to join in. Fitting through the roller shutter doors at Telford, the 1/72 scratchbuilt superdetailed Death Star simply will not! Contact Kev at: 11 Whomsley Close, Newark, Notts, NG24 2JZ. Phone 01636 684986, email: kevgreen.images@hotmail.co.uk May the Force be with him…. Kev Wilson has discontinued the Vietnam SIG, in favour of running the Luftwaffe SIG. Anyone interested in keeping the Vietnam SIG going should get in touch with Kev at 39 Chadwell Road, Leicester, LE3 6LG E-Mail: kevrev827@hotmail.com The Quarter Scale Group (IPMS Nuneaton) presenting more like a specialised SIG, though actually listed as a Branch, for reasons lost in the mists of time, has a new Branch Secretary - Alan Reeves, 17 Orkney Close, Hinckley, Leicestershire, LE10 0TA. By the time you read this in the magazine, the deadline for Branch and SIG Returns (19 April) will be looming ever larger, or indeed, may have already passed. Have a friendly chat with your Branch Secretary, and enquire politely of any SIG leaders you may occasionally associate with. Who knows, they may have accidentally overlooked this column, and inexplicably clean forgot all about their Return and SMW13 display booking. They will then very likely thank you for your timely reminder... Phil

At the time of writing, some 98% of the Returns were in, which seemed a reasonable starting point for planning what will be the biggest and best model show of all time. A clear indication of this being the largest ever is that there have been more new Branches and SIGs established. Perhaps it’s a variation on Parkinson’s law, which states that work expands to fit the time available – I can certainly vouch for that – except here, it’s displays which expand to match however much floor space we have… Still, the expansion of Branches and SIGs has many other benefits beyond even more to see at SMW, so bring them on… First up, a new Branch has been proposed for Mid- Essex, serving members from Colchester, Chelmsford, Braintree and thereabouts. Contact Mike Mawhood, 1 Maidment Crescent, Witham, Essex, CM8 1DB, 07803 149136, email jelly071.mm@gmail.com IPMS Hull has reformed. Our very own Dear Editor is a member of both this new group and the original Branch, which was last seen around sometime in the early 60s. From what I gather, there’s a broad membership, comprising old fogeys from the Beat Generation, and some young whippersnappers who most likely spend most of their time connected to mobile phones when they should be modelling instead. More details from Phil Reeder, 36 Northfield Road, Anlaby Road, Hull, HU3 6TL, Phone 01482 561467. Email: reederp@reederp.karoo.co.uk Another new Branch just formed is IPMS Middleton Cheney, (near Banbury). The Branch Secretary is Sam Evins, 91 Main Rd, Middleton Cheney, Banbury, OX17 2PD, Phone 07818 565501 email vimtomonster@hotmail.com A familiar display at the various shows, the travelling band known as 580 Modellers, is now an IPMS Branch. 580 don’t have a home to call their own, but welcome those who like to display on the show circuit. Geoff Cooper-Smith is the convoy leader, he can be contacted at 9 Combermere Close, Tyldesley, Manchester, M29 8TB, phone 01942 873298, email 580modellers@gmail.com. Further background on 580 can be found at a580modellers.blogspot.co.uk/2013/01/an-introduction-to-580-modellers-580.htmlThe SIG which I inadvertently started from a SAAF SIG themed display has now formed, having attracted further support from beyond the IPMS Brampton core membership. The Mediterranean Theatre of Operations (MTO) SIG - Spain to Suez 1936 to 1956 – is led by Alec Smith. Alec is also El Jefe para la Vida of the Latin American Aviation SIG, and would like to hear from current and would-be members to ensure his membership list is up to date. (Always a good idea, even if that’s after the return has been submitted). For info on either of these SIGs, contact Alec at 27 Manor Lane, Alconbury, Huntingdon, PE28 4EH, katana750@hotmail.co.uk (please title email LAA SIG or MTO SIG), or phone 01480 896949. Some new Branch Secretaries emerged in the Returns – these are as follows - Avon - Jason Denny, 4 Stafford Rd, Weston-Super-Mare, N Somerset, BS23 3BW, 01934 642743, jason.denny@nig-uk.com Dundee – Simon Hamilton, 2 Strome Terrace, Dundee, snicolash@hotmail.com Highland - Gary Philp, 64 Easter Rd, Kinloss, Moray, iv36 3fg, 01309 691662 Leicester – Steve Spencer, 42 Southey Close, Enderby, Leics, LE19 4QZ, 01162 869046, stephspencer@hotmail.co.uk Merseyside – Paul Dickinson, ''Dulverton' Park Drive, Thornton, Liverpool, L23 4TL, 0151 924 3900, pdickinson@uwclub.net Well done to all you fine chaps for volunteering. Well, I assume you all volunteered, anyway. Many other returns reported minor changes - emails, phones and so on. These are too many to list here, but have now been / are being updated in the online listings www.ipmsuk.co.uk/network.php and in Branch and SIG directories issued to new members - If you’d like a copy, send a ssae to either myself or Colin Marrow, our details at the back of the magazine as usual.
