I'm looking to scratchbuild a 1.75 tonne trailer for the KFS Bedford MK 4Ton GS Cargo that is currently on my bench, but I'm struggling to find decent photos/drawings? The trailer (big brother to the 3/4 ton Sankey towed behind L/Rovers) was in service with the British Army during the 80s and 90s, but doesn't seem to have been photographed much - probably too boring!
If anyone can help I would be grateful.

I've finally found some drawings of theFV2408 Arrows 1,75 tonne trailer on a German Land Rover users forum, of all places! I'm going to use these as a basis for the trailer to go with my KFS Bedford MK, which is on the bench at present. Don't know who this dude is, but I presume that he owns the FV2408.... Steve

I've managed to find a bit of time to start scratch building the trailer, using a mix of drawings and photos gathered from t'interweb. I've just about finished a first rough out for a 1/24 scale drawing of the trailer - it would have been finished by now, but I couldn't wait to start cutting plastic... If anyone wants a copy of the final version, and doesn't mind waiting a week or two for it, please just send me an email (s.bellerby@smithbellerby.co.uk). Having got this far, I've now started thinking about wheels and tyres (shows how new to this hobby I am) and wondered if anyone can suggest where to start looking? Is there such a thing as a "scale-wheels-R-us" website, or something similar, or might I be looking at turning some? Any comments welcomed. Steve

I've added a bit more detail to the towing eye arrangement and jockey wheel strut, but I've still got to make the 76 mm eye and the jockey wheel itself, which seems to be 420 mm in diameter (or 17.5 mm to scale).

Barrie, thanks for the kind words - glad you like it so far. I've used the weekend to add some more detail and correct some of the detail that wasn't quite right with the body, having found a few more photos on t'interweb. I've also been trying my hand with Milliput epoxy putty, which I've never used before, but thought that I would give it a go for the cargo cover. What incredible stuff - why didn't they have this 30 years ago when I was last involved in military modelling? I'm still struggling to find 3 wheels of exactly the right size and shape (2 runners and a spare that goes under the rear of the trailer) and am considering using those from the KFS 1/2 ton L/Rover trailer, unless I can find something closer. I also need a jockey wheel that is 17.5mm in diameter. Does anyone know if there is an aircraft kit with wheels this size (maybe a 1/48 scale bomber...)? As ever, all comments and suggestions very welcome.

I've been corresponding with some cracking folk at Crusader 80 Group and they have said that they may be able to get some photos of the underside of the trailer. I would recommend having a look at their website: www.crusader80.co.uk as they have some really interesting vehicles, if you're into British Army post war vehicles. Cheers Steve

Added a bit more detail to the sides and rear (retaining pins and chains) and some reflectors to the front that I seem to have forgotten. Also applied the first coat of Halfords grey primer. Apologies about the quality of the photos - to be honest I was being idle and used the phone, rather than getting the camera and tripod out, and doesn't it just show! I will try to do better next time... Once the final painting/weathering is completed I plan to added coloured reflectors (little-lenses) from www.little-cars.co.uk, which arrived in the post this week. Still waiting for the jockey wheel from Eduard in Poland, but it is in transit. Any comments welcome... Cheers Steve

Don't worry about the photos, they're still head and shoulders better than some 'masterpieces' seen on the Forii.

Steve
Would these trailer wheels not be the same size as normal truck tyres with a basic tread? What about comparing some Italeri truck tyres and make up your own hubs to suit !
Hope to see how this progresses.
