i've not used any mould release spray, i would be interested in your findings on it. it is rumoured to prolong the mould life, so see how many pulls you get before the mould starts to go brittle. glad you used the scales, it took me a few cock ups before i bought one. (rtv and resin not curing fully. the mess is horrible.) first pull tomorrow then. you may have to force the venting through the top a bit, or cut a slightly lager hole, see how you get on.

Richie,
when you say "force the venting through the top hole" can you elaborate how you do this? is it a case of forcing the resin into the mould?

you may need to trim the rubber where the filling 'gate' joins the tyre, if the resin is slow to fill, that is where the obtruction is. dust the mould with talc, when pouring try squeezing the mould a little, and having a bigger cut out on the vent spout will provide a little reservoir which will allow you to see the bubbles coming out and when you release, the reservoir will be sucked back in. keep going untill no bubbles appear, or the resin goes hard if your not quick enough. don't forget to sandwich the moulds with something and use elastic bands to support it. you'll soon get the hang of it. p.s. the bedford is absolutely brilliant.

Here is the mould waiting for the resin, having had a good spray of release agent.

At the risk of upsetting a certain gentleman of the Scottish persuasion I shall wait until tomorrow before mixing and pouring the resin......

Well, I couldn't resist pouring some resin to see how the mould works, so yesterday evening I got out the kitchen scales and started weighing out the two part, fast cure resin. The pour went very well and the mould appeared to fill well, with resin appearing in the air vent quite easily. Having left the mould alone for an hour for the cure to take place, it was time for the moment of truth. The elastic band and supporting wood were removed and the mould was split (very easily) and there was the cast tyre. The sidewalls and inside of the tyre were perfect and the casting channels had worked really well, BUT (there had to be a but) the tread on the tyre seemed to have trapped air or moisture, which appeared as depressions in the tread surface - not happy at all! Having slept on the problem (or rather laid awake worrying about it), I think that the issue may be down to the fact that I perhaps didn't leave the spray on release agent long enough for the liquid accelerant to evaporate completely and this was still adhering to the tread when the resin was poured. So, its back to the bench this evening, and I've sprayed the mould already this morning before leaving for the office. I may also experiment with using the wife's ultrasonic jewellery cleaner (at least I think that's what it is) to vibrate the mould during the next pour. Forget to take any photos during the excitement, which I will try to rectify tonight. Steve

I remember reading somewhere that tapping the mould (or putting it in the U/S cleaner tray ) will worry the air bubbles up and out. At least it's not all naff - good one!

Second pull now complete and much better results! I now have one uusable tyre - only two to go and of course the wheels, but it feels like progress this evening. ;D This was the mould just after opening time... and the finished tyre, with just a bit of fettling required in an hour or two The actual tyre is just 33mm in diameter. Cheers Steve
