Dear All, What with the forthcoming release of the Airfix Nimrod kit my thoughts have turned to what paint colours I use on the kit I have on order. I am intending to do the current colour scheme as worn by the Nimrod R 1's of 51 Squadron..... I note that they are painted a grey colour scheme with what appears to be a slightly lighter colour upon the upper fuselage. Can anybody tell me what these colours are? ? I have heard talk of Medium Sea Grey, but no confirmation yet. I appeal to the 'greater consciousness', any ideas...? Colin

Spent even more time exploring.......
Very, very good site.......knew a lot about it anyway, but anyone interested in low flying and photography.
Look at this site and explore, lots of good explanations/illustrations etc
Still none the wiser about colours of Nimrods though....................

The Nimrod R.1 scheme is overall BS381 626 Camouflage Grey with parts of the upper fuselage in BS381 627 Light Aircraft Grey. There is rumour that the R.1s will switch to overall Camouflage Grey in the future, like the MR.2 fleet.
The DCG/LAG scheme is in the Airfix kit along with decals for all three current R.1s of 51 Sqn.

Whilst I agree with Jonathan in the main, the top of these aircraft is painted almost white ...this "apparently" gives a two degree reduction in cabin temperature.

According to the official Wyton paintshop diagrams, the tops are Light Aircraft Grey, and I've also aasked various other Nimrod personael about this. Do you know Pete if the the LAG is being further lightened before application?

While we're at it, what about the older white/grey scheme?

While we're at it, what about the older white/grey scheme? Gloss white and BS 381C/627 Light Aircraft Grey according to the HS drawings I have here. The very early batch were apparently painted in BS 2660 9-095 Grey, a paint series rarely used on aircraft.

Hi, After doing some investigation I can now confirm that the top's of these aircraft are painted in LAG as Jonathan suggests, but the paint is applied over a white filler which makes it appear lighter. Also, in the future all the R1 aircraft will be painted grey all over like the MR2's are . Hope this helps ;D Best Regards Pete.
