Hi, I hope I am posting this in the correct section as it's aircraft related I'm sure it will be but admins please move if required.
I have an old colleague who to quote his words has a loft full of built up airfix models which are just languishing there, they are from when his son was younger and built models. He has to clean it out so he can get the loft insulated again, he has no real idea of what is there but his son states that there are should be 1/24 Spitfire, JU 87 Hurricane and Harrier a large monogram B-52 the odd 1/32 scale aircraft and many 1/72 scale aircraft. My colleague reports they are unlikely to be in particularly good shape with parts having dropped off etc and may not be to very high standards as his son was in his teens when the interest took hold and that would be some years back as his son is now in his 40's but if I was interested I could have all that I wanted so he can dispose of them in a responsible recycling type way as far as he is concerned which I felt was quite a responsible attitude and way to go. I am going to pop along tomorrow for a look see at whats there.
My initial question is... Does anyone think it's a good idea to revisit old models especially built by someone else. and further would these models have value in parts or for dioramas of downed aircraft etc.
I will endeavour to get some pictures probably just on my mobile so may be able to add a few pics tomorrow for more info if it's generally thought to be of use and anyone may be interested in any of them etc.
Any thoughts from anyone please let me know.
Ian

I suspect that you'll find them to have little if any monetary value.
However stripped down and removed of their paint they may make a nice selection of practice pieces.

Hi THC, Thanks for your response, I wasn't really looking at monetary value in them, I already assume that they are in essence worthless in terms of monetary value. My reference to value was basically in terms of value to any member who could use any of them.
I was thinking more in the line of spare parts for conversion etc, possible downed aircraft diorama subjects if interested, essentially something for free which may be recycled into something collectable or merely provide worthwhile build time for members on a budget. Also as you say practice pieces... I am intending to invest in an airbrush and thus will no doubt be in need of some such items!!
If there is an interest among members I am happy to document here what I find...

It would be intersting to know what is avaiable in terms of aircraft/scale and damage state. how would you propose to send or deliver any to another location..eg mail or personal delivery etc.

Hi brightonrock, Unfortunately I didn't manage to get over to see the caché over the weekend but have got my colleague to send me a few images of one or two of the models via his mobile phone. Again unfortunately they are not definitive of absolute condition or what is missing as he states that there are many of the missing parts spread around on the loft floor where they have stood. Apologies for the rather grainy images but they were done in low light on his mobile. The images he has sent are of a 1/72 B-52, 1/24 Ju 87 Stuka, 1/24 Hurricane and a 1/24 P51 Mustang... There are several more including 1/24 Spitfire, plus others in 1/32 and 1/72, 1/24 Harrier, 1/32 Beaufighter and from what he says many other 1/72 models incl F-15 Tomcat... The above are all aircraft he recognises. I have the images saved into drop-box and the link is www.dropbox.com/sh/vubuoq5g2c29he7/aOF3akyRPwAs regards delivery with the exception of the B-52 which looks pretty big I'd be happy to pack and send at recipients expense or alternatively if there is a show I can get to I'd be happy to transport the items to hand over if I am attending. Having been out of the scene for some years I am not sure what shows are still to come but this wouldn't be a problem.

The link did not open successfully, but no matter, the alternative thought process may suite me;
It is the 1/72 scale aircraft that interest me, if you are on the verge of destroying or throwing away the whole lot, then I would be interested in those that could give me spare parts. This would save on postage and delivery considerations if you are willing to remove certain bits. but others may well have more interest in the complete item less a few bits.

I hope to visit my friend tomorrow and hope I will be able to at list get a basic list of whats there. I don't want to commit totally at this stage as I have had a warning from she who should be obeyed already about bringing derelict models home... lol So will report back when I get to see them.
Not sure why the link didn't open for you... have got a couple of friends to try it and they have viewed them successfully one using the www on his mobile phone so should be ok.

Hi Ian
Another possibility is giving them to the 'Give an Old Model a New Home' stand at Scale ModelWorld in November. The proceeds will be donated to the RNLI - see your Magazine that's about to come through your letterbox. I will be in my EC yellow at the Spalding, Brampton and Newark Shows and would be happy to see you there, if that would suit you better? Alternatively, I'll probably be at the Driffield Show on Sunday.
Regards, Alfie

Alfie, That sounds like it could be a good idea... Still not got to see the models in the flesh as I had not realised but my friend was going away for the Bank Holiday and we've now fixed up for a coffee and a look later this week. I am unsure of which magazine? I am not yet an IPMS Member but intend to be soon. All the shows you mention are music to my ears, I was wondering about shows and how to access the information about them... if you could post or PM me some info on upcoming shows I'd be very grateful. Also note your in the Harrier SIG, there is a 1/24 Harrier amongst the wreckage too... Regards and thanks for the idea Ian

Hi Ian
Not a problem - and welcome to the fold. The Magazine that I mentioned is the one that the Society publishes six times a year. Issue 4/2013 (which should be with members this week) includes details of IPMS events and the first of the Telford briefs.
Yes, I'm part of the Harrier SIG having spent over half my working life associated with the 1:1 scale versions.
Regards, Alfie
