Hi all,
I guess I am fairly typical as a born again modeller. I remember making a number of Airfix kits from around the age of 8 through my early teens. mostly WW2 aircraft a few vehicles and ships.....
I have a memories of building a sailing ship...Santa Maria i think then trying to sail it in the bath.
most attempts were crudely done and rarely painted in the early days.
I have fond memories also of 'Dog fight Doubles' being rapidly built and hung with cotton from the ceiling in dramatic conflict.
Most models eventual fell foul of teenage destructive tendencies, shot down by enemy air rifle pellets or hurtling to the ground in flames impacting with splashes of molten plastic.
Some models lasted remember building a large scale P51D mustang. which i thought was amazing at the time and had to save up to buy. That stayed collecting dust for many years.
Skip forward around 40 years.... the year before last a friend convinced me to go to Telford....... and I'm at once back in my childhood and stunned and overwhelmed by the beauty skill and detail of the kits being made and the techniques being used to finish and display them.
I came away that year with just a couple of kits which I soon decided would have to wait until I got some practice in and could do them justice. I have dabbled on and off for the last year and returning to Telford last November reinforced how much i need to learn.
I don't think any one particular subject will hold my focus going forward. WW2 aircraft are familiar and bring back childhood memories so i do have a number of my 'favourites' in my small stash. I picked up a few AFVs at Telford, being attracted by the amazing detail they contain and the challenge of the incredible range of finishing techniques that are applied to them.
I still have a slightly irreverent approach to the hobby I feel more drawn to the visual realism and effects and techniques, than to historical accuracy ( although I can see the appeal of researching and linking to actual historic events, so who knows)
