I visited SMW in 2014 for the first time and took a lot of photos in the competition hall on the Sunday. It was very interesting as all the models had been judged and awards made. My particular interests are Sci Fi and Car and Truck modeling, but some of the judgements (or lack of) really puzzled me.
In the Science Fiction area was a beautiful model of Iron Man where the modeler had skilfully completely re animated the figure and also had actually sculpted a Michael Downey Jr's head for the model. This model did not even rate an award at this show. Cannot see how the judges managed to overlook this particular model. It was superbly made and painted and deserved proper recognition. Did the judges think it was an out of box kit? Whilst still on Sci Fi, I could not see how a small steampunk car model however well painted and made straight out of the box got best Sci Fi model in the show.
A glider model won best aircraft. A lovely model, yes. But did it deserve such a high accolade? I thought that there were more deserved gold winners that should have got best aircraft model.
The coastal salvage vessel 'Help' was a deserved best ship model, as were the best figure and AFV models as I saw it.
In the Automotive (Your Civilian Vehicles) category, there wqs a lovely model of the Fiat Mephistopheles Racer that only got a commended and should have got more. The model for me that should have undoubtedly got a gold was that Hispano Suza model that was planked in real polished wood with thousands of brass rivets. It was superb, fully detailed, very complex scratch built built model but only got a silver award. Why? I could not see how a steam lorry that although very well made, used a lot of kit items in it, and had a glaring error on it with a way out of period 01 Telephone Number on it's company livery managed to beat the Hispano. What were the judges thinking of ?
Just a few observations about your competition from a visitor that may be food for thought. Considering the status of your show perhaps the judging could do with some improvement and reviewed in certain areas
