In 1/72 I would tend to use painted paper but what do you recommend for straps? I have seen reference to masking tape and silver foil from cigarette packets but, at this scale does it matter, also, would you bother with brass etched buckles, etc for something smaller than a hand in full scale therefore less than 1mm at model scale? maybe pointed end painted dull silver, black or metallic blue would suffice?

Masking tape, cut into strips, and painted, is very good. Being adhesive they'll go exactly where you want, and stay put, but some of the cheaper grades will dry out, and pull free. Try Micropore, a self-adhesive bandage; as well as staying adhesive, it has a slight weave, and looks quite realistic, in 1/48th & 1/72nd. Patience
