Does anyone have any tips regarding the painting of figures? I have a couple of verlinden German tank crew that I hope to set off with a near completed Stug III. The uniforms etc are not really a problem as I have quite a bit of literature to refer to, mainly the excellent Osprey book on modelling SS figures. It explains how to paint the flesh tones but before I start buying up the necessary Vallejo Model paints (as used in the book) I wonder what you guys use. Have heard good things about Games Workshop paint but worried my Tank Commander will come over all 'Orc-ish'.
Look forward to hearing your views.

I bought one of the excellent Andreas flesh tone box sets. I find them easy to use and cheap to buy.

Ive taken to using oil paints, the great thing is the paint takes a while to dry which enables you to mix and blend on the subject. The only down side is that some time you can get a "satin" finish.

hi fatty , to cut down on the shine with oil paint , use a cardboard pallet . the method place the colours on - separated by at least 1 inch a part. leave for a day under a cover to keep the dust off and you will see an oil slick round each paint blob . now you are ready to use the oil paint as most of residue spare oil is soaked up on the cardboard. a good use for the reverse side of cereal packet , not the glossy side . cheers Ian

as Ian says the Andrea paints are excellent and i have quite a few, but i must admit i paint almost exclusively these days with games workshop. They dry almost instantly which has its good and bad points, but for flesh " elf flesh" is certainly a good place to start.

All Thanks for your very prompt replies. Its all given me food for thought. I guess its a case of 'suck it and see'. I will let you know how I get on. By the way, I have also found a very informative site that deals with painting figures if anyone is interested: www.btinternet.com/~model.soldiers/page37.htmlPaul

Don't knock the orks... I found I learned more about painting 'humans' while trying to paint with a green pallet of colours. I spent less time worrying and more time blending greens. After I looked at my orks a few weeks later I learned to relate how I was shading and working my brushes - now it works for any colour. Worth a try at least...

I was taught to paint figures by the very talented Tony Wilbraham. I always use oils and my pallet consists of kitchen roll stretched over a piece of plywood. And look up a product called Liquin, it helps oils dry. Wolfie.

Thats a very impressive example - do I need a special primer for oils or will my trusty can of Halfords Grey do the trick?
Looking forward to my next shopping trip to Hobbycraft with a list of colours.

Ayup Folks,
Sorry about this but I'm wearing the Moderator hat.
Some of you may have seen the photo of the figure posted by 'Ratch', unfortunately I've had to remove it. Nothing wrong in my view with the figure, but as this is an open site and viewed by modellers of all ages, it was removed before we received a complaint.
Nick.
