Just read Peter White's editorial in the latest edition of TMW issue 123, March 2007. He mentions the lack of truck models on display at SMW 2006 and asks why more truck modellers don't display or enter the competition?
Since the demise of the 'Trucks and Emergency Vehicles' SIG, and also the demise of its short lived replacement, truck modelling within the IPMS(UK) seems to have gone undergound, is there a cure? ...
Comments anyone?

"Convoy" as a group build with or without trailers

You need to know what the proportion of truck kits sales is against, say, aircraft kit sales. It wouldn't surprise me if there were 100 aircraft kits sold for every truck kit, which would explain why you don't see many of them at SMW or anywhere else. Why is truck modelling less popular? I don't know, but the fact they don't fight might be part of it. Or maybe it's just that truck modellers don't join IPMS. Who knows?

I don't know whether they may be an element of history attached to the more recent non-appearance at SMW.
There was a (non -IPMS) truck group at a 'Nationals' a few years ago (I think they were from Manchester?), and KFS had a stand for a couple of years. I don't know whether it came under the 'not made welcome' banner or some such, but they didn't reappear.
Personally I think seeing tables with high quality builds on them, and the size that accompanies the Big Rigs, makes for great diversity.
Wasn't there a similar discussion on the AFV section of the forum around Christmas? I think all 'minority' areas, ie non aircraft, are in the same boat - if you'll excuse the pun. Another question may be why are aircraft so popular?

cant see why trucks are not popular mysellf especially the american jobs like peterbilt . i,ve never done a truck personally due to the size trailer an all but once my rooms sorted i will be doing one as a nice big centre display piece

I have to agree with Rich, there does seem to only be a small minority that do cars, trucks and motorcycles in the UK and a hugh following for planes, and military vehicles. Yet over in the USA the cars and bikes have a hugh following.
Personally I would love to have a go at a big rig but space is a real problem at present, but one day I will give it a go.

and a hugh following for planes, and military vehicles. Huge following for Military vehicles? Doesn't feel like that when I'm trying to get a display together for the Armour SIG. As the IPMS is a minority group amongst modellers so non airplane modellers are a minority amongst them. Hey - maybe they are too busy building to post on the Forum ;D

Rich Well Manchester are still going and I suspect KFS found there were not enough sales to warrant the expense of being there, We do have the Truck model contest and show at Gaydon every June where hundreds of trucks are on display including my fleet, this is along side the old commercial vehicle show there. cheers Ted Taylor

I also am a truck builder as some of you know, but thats probably cos I am a truck driver as was Ted and Nick the only other truck modellers I know.
There were a handful at Huddersfield and I know about Gaydon although I've never been.

I have built the odd truck model and they are good. There was an Southern based modeling group I saw at the last Southern Expo who had some truley outstanding builds, I just cant remember what club.
Does anyone know who built the flatbed which won in the truck class that was nice kit.
