My other favourite forum spc.org.uk is about to start an on line group build themed around Ferrari. I have been mulling over what to build for it. Well I figured in for a penny in for a pound and pulled the recent Fujimi 1/20th 126c2 from the stash. I have already acquired the Model Factory Hiro upgrade set for the kit along with the simple and less expensive FMD version. As you can see the MFH set is fairly comprehensive. This is the real thing. Note the marking differences on these cars which differ only by a few weeks and a couple of thousand miles. Much has been said about the profile of the nose in the Fujimi kit and the MFH kit has not helped. These two pictures illustrate the differences. Personally I would have stuck with the kit version but the MFH set came along and I get a good deal on it so what the hell I'll build it. I'm going to build Villeneuve's car from San Marino which is a given to anyone who knows me well! Watch this space. H

Yeah exactly. Still It will get built. I'm just trying to focus on the bench at the moment then I'm on with stage two. Tidying up the three part build and sorting out.
I feel a cuppa coming on!

I'm sat currently trying to work out how to put it together best and I'm frankly a bit underwhelmed by it. This thing cost a great deal of money and it is just not up to scratch. This is a picture of the white metal and resin in the box for basic reference. I'll come back to that later. The kit starts of having you modify the Fujimi floor pan to fit a new cast white metal lower suspension piece. This is a direct copy of the Fujimi part moded to fit the MFH parts, right down to the repetition of the ejector pins from the plastic kit. MFH provide you with a nice cast white metal upper and lower monocote, lovely I hear you say, problem is that it is a simple copy of the Fujimi parts with various details removed. Now they could have saved a lot of time and money by simply providing you with a series of images to show how to modify the Fujimi parts. This is basically what I intend to do as the surface texture on the Cast metal parts is dreadful and precludes their use polished or painted without a lot of filling and polishing. The Plastic parts will be far easier to use. In fact if I go this route I can combine them with the FMD etched monocote to give a very nice natural metal finish, although I may still resort to Alclad Polished Aluminium. See pictures to illustrate my points So to wrap it up, MFH could have produced this correction kit for considearbly less cost by eliminating a number of parts that are simple copies of the Fujimi bits. I'm not going to spend this kind of money and not be able to do stuff like this. Sorry not impressed! H

Don't get me wrong there are some lovely bits in the MFH Transkit.
The wheels and hubs for instance are just georgous. The resin body parts are superb, but they've gone and spoilt that as well by using whitemetal castings under the front supension housings rather than resin so you end up trying to fair in the harder metal parts and fixing disociate materials when a resin fairing would have been easier to fix and work with.
I'm working my way through the kit stage by stage cleaning up the bits as I go. By the weekend next I should be ready to start painting bits

Ok this is getting tricky. I'm attempting to polish the MFH Metal monocote to look like the fabricated Ferrari original. After four hours hard work I'm left with this: I'm a bit nonplussed, I've sanded, wirebrushed and sworn at this thing and I'm getting nowhere. The pitting visible before polishing is getting more and more visible as I go. I'm inclined to return to the plastic parts and start modification again. Anyone got any stunning ideas for polishing White metal bits? H

Cover it with filler, sand it and paint it with Alclad II ...
