For a long time I've wanted to build a model that marks the sacrifice and courage of allied service personnel in WWII. By a quirk of fate I finally came across a subject that fitted the bill, the merchant navy. Considering what they were asked to do and what they went through (Russian convoys etc) they fit the bill perfectly.
But...
I'm struggling to find a decent quality WWII model that covers this subject matter. The Liberty ship (trumpeter) doesn't fit the bill for various reasons, there's the old Revell 1/400 Esso 'Glasgow' tanker but it is very old, very poor and AFAIK there are no detail sets available for it. A Flower Class Corvette (not the matchbox kit, it's too big) is a last option, it's not the merchant navy (although it sailed with them) so it doesn't really fit.
Does anyone know of a suitable subject out there...a ship or a figure?
Neil

Why not retro fit the Flower Class Corvette back to a trawler, that's what they were originally, weren't they?

Interesting thought, references could be a challenge I have found some Aoshima 'auxilliary' ships which might fit the bill. Although they're Japanese ships a merchant ship is a merchant ship...(or is it?) and could possibly work as a last resort. Converted liners is another option but might need some heavy duty conversion and I'm not sure what was added or removed when they were pressed into service. I'm hoping there's a merchant figure or bust out there somewhere ....

Hi Neil. If memory serves, IPMS North Somerset had a model of a merchant ship on their Film Set display a few years back. Try to contact Fred Tooke, the club sec, he should be able to find out what Harry used to build it from.

Thanks guys, I'll follow the leads up. I did think of doing the Queen Mary (using the Revell kit as a basis) but there could be too many undocumented mods to deal with, Oerlikons etc.
