I'm going cross-eyed trying to find a Phantom kit in 1/72 that gives seperate pylons. Every kit I've looked at has pylons welded to fuel tanks. Please help.

The Hase ones all have seperate inboard pylons, but to be honest, I don't recall seeing any Phantom photos (much less kits) with outboard pylons fitted without the tanks!
The only exceptions would be when gunpods or towed targets are fitted instead. The towed target pylon is in one of the Hase weapons sets.
Cheers,
Rob M.

Thanks Rob. I wanted to do a Fox One Gunfighter aircraft and its the centerline pylon thats got me climbing walls. The Hasegawa weapons box cover shows an f-4e with gunpod attached but no kit seems to give the pylon required. Any advice?
Best Regards Max

Hi Max, The Fujimi British Tooms have a centreline gunpod (with pylon attached!) From memory, I don't know if they were the sameas the USAF used? Could that be an option for you? The Hase ones all have seperate inboard pylons, but to be honest, I don't recall seeing any Phantom photos (much less kits) with outboard pylons fitted without the tanks! Rob, I don't know if you're talking about any Tooms - if you are, take a look at almost every photo of USN machines - those with wing tanks fitted are very much the exception! In fact, there was a post on the Yahoo Phantom group, where a former USN Toom pilot posted that in all his time flying them, he only flew with wing tanks once, & that was when they were all flying off the carrier back to shore base & they wanted the tanks off the ship as it was going in for refit & they wanted it as empty as possible! Keef Edit: Just came across the original post; "On the 1974 fly-in we had to fly off with wing tanks (empty) just to get them off the ship before she went into the yards. It was the only time I ever flew with wing tanks (10 years and 1,400 hours). "

Keef my friend! Thank you, that'll do nicely. Oh I remember those days in Aldeburgh as those unbelievable smoky monsters came over the beach on their way to Bentwaters/Woodbridge. Then we got the A-10 hoover- ah well....

Hi Keef,
I meant that the configs in most of the photos of Tooms I've seen are either: Clean (no pylons, no stores). Inboard pylons only (with or without stores). Inboards and outboards with tanks fitted to the outboards.
Just don't seem to be many photos of Tooms with outboard pylons fitted, unless they're carrying tanks or other stores there (Towed Tgt, Gunpod, MER or CBUs).
Cheers,
Rob.

To be honest I hadn't noticed that before - often noticed the lack of tanks, but not pylons! Out of interest, I've just gone through my current on-line store of Phantom pics - which are mainly Marines ones at the mo, the rest having been saved to disc. Those seem to show about 50-50 pylons or no pylons! Only two out of about 40 pics show jets with anything fitted to the pylons - one empty TER's, & the other - tanks! All the best Keef

Best Regards Max Max, Just got in (0500) and just caught this thread. there was no such thing as a "centreline" pylon on the Phantom. The centreline tank had its own fairing and attachment built integrally with the tank. For anything else on the centre line, MER's, Recce Pods, Su Gun etc, there was a separate adapter . Give me a few hours kip and I'll put some more info, pix and techy stuff up which hopefully will explain all Dennis

The fujimi phantoms have seperate pylons for the outer stations. To be honest you very rarely see phantoms carrying anything other that tanks on these stations.
I have seen photos of RAF phantoms carrying recording equipment here for missile test firings.
Also USAF phontoms did carry weapons here. One of the most famous was "Chico The Gunfighter" which carried 20mm gunpods on the outer staions in it role as FAST FAC.

Whilst having a quiet contemplation in that smallest of rooms I was perusing SAMI nov. 2007 and came across a great colour photo on page 1090 of an early F-4E carrying bullpups on the inner pylons and MERs with what appears to be CBUs on the outer pylons. Now that would make a great model.
Thanks all for the help. Max

Modellers Datafile 12 Part1: USAF Varients shows an F-4D on page 35, top photo, with clean outboard pylon fitted. Datafile 13 Part 2: US Navy & Marine Corps, page 38 F-4J 5749 has outboard fitted and clean, page 42 F-4J 7259 has outboard pylon clear (but no inner pylon!) also 5736 at top of page has outer pylon clean.
Your point is well taken though it is very rare to find photographs with clean outer pylons.
