Julien, I have to say that the PR 9 is not that bad, it's all the panel lines/trenches that annoy me, so I am filling and sanding them all. The Korpen however is proving more of a challenge than first suspected... A lot of priming and then sanding... The model has lots of subtle dimples that only really show up when sanded. Nothing that cannot be corrected without effort, but I have never built a vacform that has so many....

Moving on.... Started the engines, despite sanding to the line, when I assembled the engines you end up with quite a mismatch. Not a good photo but hopefully you can see how much bigger the two sides are than the engine front, more sanding and it proves the value of dry runs... To attach the engines to the fuselage you need to build the pylons. Because the pylons are quite small and narrow, I have filled them with green stuff. The Toluene can be quite destructive to the plastic, so this is only something I would do with very small parts and then put them on a radiator quickly to evaporate the Toluene. Starting to add the 'lumps and bumps'. Because the lower radome fits onto the lower fuselage, wrapped sandpaper around the fuselage and sanded radome to the profile it is going to fit. Glued on, ...and then onto the tailplane. Spar put through the fin to try and give really good secure mounting for the sanding to come. Tailplane's and lower fin added as well as engine pylons. I know I have commented upon it before, but the size of the model is becoming more apparent. Compare with Nimrod kit, also in construction. As time goes on the weakest area of the model becomes more apparent, and it applies to both sides. The very public area of the joint between fore and aft fuselages coincides with the wing root joint. Only time and primer will show how well this is going.

Colin,
Love the idea of the sandpaper wrapped around the fuse to get the radome to sit properly, now why hadn't I thought of that? Keep up the good work she's really coming on, it doesn't half remind me of the RAF Sentinal, what has the Korpen got in that radome then and what's it's full role?

Cheers Ian, it does help to give a nice fit.... Do not know for sure, isn't that always the way with Recce aircraft... But the Korpen is a SIGINT aircraft officially. Certainly enough aerials underneath to support this, very much like Nimrod R1, but suspect surface Radar with Side scanning Radars, looking at the 'bumps' and bearing in mind Sweden's coastline.... how much control and command, well your guess is as good as mine, until we find out more................. Moving on, The engines and the pylons they are attached to. Easy to glue to the fuselage, but need a bit of attention before engines are attached, cannot easily get to them after engines are on. Once the pylons are on, you have to remember that the engines are mounted in a 'vertical' position, so you have to sand the pylon with this in mind. Adding a couple more of the 'lumps and bumps' on the front fuselage. Now these are quite small pieces and difficult to handle, so have attached a 'handle' with the knowledge that I can cut them off afterwards and sand down. Same principle, sand paper curled around fuselage, so sanding the piece to the curve it is going to fit. Sanded and then glued on, with 'stalk' still in place. Cut the stalk off, sorry a little out of focus... Wet and dry it down, bit of primer, jobs a good one...... Winglets added, more sanding and a coat of primer. Starting to look more like it but still discovering dints and bumps to sand.....

The adventure continues............. Engines glued on, having been wet and dry sanded already. Bit of filler in the resulting gaps.... Now this was not quite as easy as I thought it would be. Bearing in mind the engines have no locating lugs or lines inscribed. Had to line them up both from the front and side. At the same time ensuring the engine was vertical. Now I have some issues as to the correctness of the engine shape. Filler looks a bit of a mess once on the engine pylons, and it's an awkward place to sand. Beginning to think that pylons might have been better glued to engines first, but that would have left me with the same problem of filling and sanding, gluing them to the fuselage. Ah well, back to the wet and dry sanding.... A coat of primer will show how well it has gone....

That looks realy nice Colin. I will be following this with interest. Every time i see a Vac Form kit coming together it makes me want to build one. I will try and finish my Koster Aero enterprises Do217 sometime soon. After that some of the Sanger models range is rather tempting.

Dear All, Moved on from the engines, hopefully they are alright. Started to add the various aerials that cover the aircraft. Drove me crazy trying to make use of the injection moulded aerials that came with the kit. They are awful. Started to cut my own out of card. There are so many aerials of different sizes and shapes that it has proved difficult to get shape and exact location right, lets face it not many people take photos of the aerials on an aircraft, apart from modellers..... Started on top and then headed underneath. One problem I had not anticipated, is how difficult it is to 'handle' the model once these aerials start sprouting everywhere. Not looking forward to masking all the leading edges...... Colin

More to come, but 'saving' photos until I can do an interesting post..
Plus Canberra is taking time, and Nimrod, and Venom, and Mirage F1.
Got a week off soon, expect more posts then.... I hope.

Hi Colin,
Come on then, you're not far off completing her now it shouldn't take that long.
Thanks for the last 2 days, you deserve a rest mate. There are a lot of modellers whom you have solved their decal problems for this weekend and I am sure are grateful.
Take it easy, speak to you soon.
Regards
Ian

Ian,
Thanks for kind words.......
Mind still buzzing about the weekend, although wine and soda is easing the problem......!
Glad I have tomorrow off....!!
Glad at the thought of a change in direction, not what I was thinking of three days ago, I have to admit....?
Okay, will follow you on AEW/ELINT theme. The thought of complete line up most appealing... on any scale, let alone adding to it.
Korpen, R99, Argus, all in 1/72, Finnish Lear Jet in 1/48th..? Already looking at photos.... If I do Lear Jet, will do it with a view to making master copy, interested..?
Email to follow.
