Ayup folks, can any of you nautical modellers help a new member? ... I've copied the following from a posting in another thread. Nick. Hi Guys HELP I started the Airfix Severn lifeboat(big mistake) I have not built a model in about 20 years and found it not easy in fact it does not fit too well at all So giving up on it for now.... Anyway as I would like to build boats anyone got any good suggestions as to what i should build first a good model for an amateur builder to get back into the swing of it. Thanks Dave

Hi Nick,
I too tried the Airfix Lifeboat - it's to oneside at this time until I can work-up enough enthusiasm to complete it.
I would recommend Revells' German Fast Attack Craft S-100 1/72 scale. Kit No 05051. It's a reasonable size, reasonably priced. There are not too many fiddly bits to deal with & went together very easily. The finished product is a nice model. I enjoyed it anyway.

Thanks John, I've also got the lifeboat, and it's put aside until I can do it justice. I've also got the old Revell 'Goodwin' lightship, sitting there until I feel the urge to do something different.

I had the lifeboat, built it, suffered in the process, then when it got damaged in transit, was an excuse to dispose of it from my life! Never again! Would recommend the S100 though, very nice kit, and agree with the other comments on here. Keep an eye open for the new Airfix 350 scale Illustrious kit, looking good!!!

Revells re-tooled Tirpitz looks a goody as well, vastly overpriced in some places though!!

An Airfix Destroyer might be a good start as theres not to many parts to go wrong and make's a good model at a fair price.
I remember them cheaper, but now a days things seem to have risen with the years.
Choosing a simple ship all depends on how you look at it, Warships seem to be more easy than sailing ships, motorboats like MTBs and E Boats are easier with less parts to put together.
I must admit I have never found a simple ship, maybe cheap once but no more.
A second hand ship might be a good bet if you can get it cheap what ever it is and go from there.
I seem to be interested in ships lately, but the one I am building is not easy or cheap.

I too have built the lifeboat..................but the therapy is all finished now...twitch!
Suggest the Revell S100 Schnellboot as a good start for a ship model. Super quality, relatively easy paint scheme, goes together very well and looks really good. Any of the other Airfix 72nd scale boats are also really good as well.

Could I reccomend the Airfix RAF Rescue Launch (WhaleBack) plenty of scope and space for detailing but good to build straight from the box. Numerous options I think and when I built it some time ago, IE when it first came out. It went together beautiful. Quite colourful too greys yellows and blacks and could make the basis of a good sea diorama with a Shagbat (Walrus)and dingy. Now theres another thing i need to get out of my head!!
