Hi rossm In my copy of Morgan & Shacklady it's easier to be convinced the spinner is a different colour to the airframe than to say it's the same but it could go either way. If they just took a prop off the production line would it have been Sky? You kow, I took a look at my copy of Morgan & Shacklady last night and yes, I think you've hit the nail in the head regarding your suggestion that the spinner would have been Sky for the very reason you say - a bog standard prop and spinner were most likely to have been used. After all, why rig up a bespoke item? Also I was struck by the differences between the photo at the start of this thread and the very similar (but also rather different) photo in Morgan & Shacklady. the way the light falls hides and reveals so much detail in each. Regards

Having spent literally hundreds of hours studying this aircraft,
H.F. period =, aire superiority schemes current. P.R.U. blue upper
(Stocks of this and dark earth appear to have been unused in the middle east until used by I.D.F.A.F. . Meteors mustangs etc)
In the large volume (two books) one alfred price., The colour / shadeing / shadows / lighting , IS consisant with other P.R.U. Pictures on that paper / printing.
SO , id say its P.R.U. blue , the whole b.... airframe , inc. Spinner (the suns on it )
Now if any of you blokes are going to Pakistan , Id like a set of Supermarine Attacker wings please. And if anybodys got a Mk 18 Spitfire fuselage . . . ?
Somewhere in one book someone goes on about testing " THAT " canopy - Windscreen.
Windscreen . tested on more than one airframe . (then deposited on NN660) Literaly a "test" (one of ) componant, at that stage . Demisting suspect initially.
Also, the aircraft lost a canopy , at one stage. or broke it. one ( the earlyer ?) was more bulged. 'Blown ' .

Hi Chaps, I am Tony, the chap who has the licence to recover NN660. We have been painstakingly recovering the aircraft piece by piece.
I have not been that secretive as has been suggested....only over the location as it would be illegal if anyone tries to recover besides the farmer would be mighty unhappy and has instructed his staff to keep a close eye on it!
I am delighted to share details of this fascinating aircraft and its brave pilot with anyone who wants to know.
We have some fantastic items and paint chips that have allowed more to be known about the incident and importantly the aircraft colour scheme. It was two tone grey....I would like to ascertain the exact shade (for my model) and others to learn from. The spinner remains are duck egg blue....spinners are very soft alloy and the parts are definitely from it. The screen is a bit weird as others have noted. As far as I can tell, it was a standard later (late Mk5 on) internal armoured screen with a thick outer perspex rounded outer part. This can be seen on the Shacklady book photo.
The aircraft was the sole Type 371 and was a bit of a technology demonstrator with a MkXIV fuselage and laminar flow wing. One can see why it was a bit 'thrown together'.
Send your questions and I will be delighted to answer them. The attached photo shows the prop tip covering with its (then) fresh yellow paint. If someone around the Salisbury area has a good paint chart I would be delighted to show them chips to establish reliable paint codes
cheers Tony

Tony, possibly your best bet would be Vasko Barbic, who, as well as having spent years researching all things Spitfire, also lives a short distance south-east of Salisbury. For obvious reasons, i won't put his details on here, but, if you'd like to PM me, I'll pass them on. Edgar
