Hi Everyone. This is my first time on here, so 'treat me gently' I live in Lancashire and I am a keen modeller (when I get the time !!). Mainly 1/72 aircraft , but anything else that interests me, I'll have a dabble. Anyway, what I need to know is can the airfix/heller DH89 be converted into a DH84? I know there was a resin kit of the DH84 by 'Rugrat' but it seems unobtainable. I would have thought the conversion I mentioned would be feasible, but I need your help. That's if there is anyone out ther that can help. Regards Patrick

Ayup Patrick, Welcome to the forum. You may have blinked and seen your post suddenly flit from where you posted it, to Alfie's bit here on the TAS forum. The reason being is that your post will have a better chance of an answer here, we're not that bad here and we always treat new members gently ... So, best of luck with your enquiry and I look forward to your posts here.

Seeking definitive information I looked in my Air Britain 'The Story of The de Havilland Dragon Types' and then remembered why it didn't find it helpful to modellers. No plans, few dimensions, lots of pictures and other info, but the sort of stuff we need is missing. So back to the web for drawings and information: membres.lycos.fr/wings2/3vues/dh84_3v.jpgmembres.lycos.fr/wings2/3vues/dh89_3v.jpgwww.pilotfriend.com/aircraft%20performance/dehavilland/4.htmwww.aviastar.org/air/england/havilland_dh-84.phpwww.aviastar.org/air/england/havilland_rapide.phpwww.glue-it.co.uk/aircraft/biplanes-list.htmlwww.aviastar.org/air/england/havilland_dh-90.phpThe last one is just to complete the set....the DH90 was the prettiest of them all in my humble opinion! Rugrat did one of them, too. Lovely kit, I have it as a Swedish Tp3 in silver dope. I cannot comment on the accuracy of these drawings, but the will give you an idea of the changes needed. de Havilland went from concept to completed DH84 prototype in two months, and they believed in standardising things as much as possible so they 'recycled' existing aircraft parts. The two fuselages are similar, but quite different around the nose. The DH 84 fuselage was based on an enlarged Fox Moth, and the DH90 was then developed from that. The glazing varied not only between the two types, but also in Marks within the types. The tailplane is also different, sightly enlarged on the Rapide to provide 'further fore and aft stability' although the fin/rudder are classic dH. The wings are, of course, totally different. Interestingly the Air Britain book refers to the DH84 Dragon outer wings as being from the Tiger Moth and the engine cowlings from the Puss Moth. The outer wings were also designed to fold rearward on the DH 84, similar to the Gipsy Moth....The DH89 Rapide wings were based on those of the DH86 Express airliner but with only two engines. The cowling and wheel shroud is totally different. It has things like flaps, too! I can only wish you luck, I suspect that the conversion is not impossible (little is) but is quite a major task. There is a lot to do, but I'm sure that plastic card, strip, Strutz and balsa will be sufficient to keep you out of mischief for some time. John

Hi John. Many thanks for your reply. I quite agree with what you have said and I have taken on board your useful comments regarding the aircraft differences. I am definitely going to have a 'bash'!!! It will probably stress me out, but 'nothing ventured, nothing gained. I think the DH89 kit is my only option in the scarecity of the 'rugrat ' kit. The reason I am undertaking this is because of an article I came across about Amy Johnson. I have the frog dg60g gipsy moth, and I want to create a modelling theme of the aircraft she flew. However, once again, thanks for your help, and onwards and upwards !!!. I will keep you posted. Andy

In Classics of the Air book published by Haynes, there's a cutaway drawing of a D.H.84 Dragon.

Patrick, I have three pictures of 'Seafarer' G-ACCV that may help you. It lacked any cabin windows as it had long range tanks in the fuselage. Nowhere in the 'Dragons' book does it state the colour, which could be deep blue, black, dark green (which I recall was the colour of Jason, I believe) or even red depending upon the film type. The lettering appears to be white or possibly silver. I have no images of 'Seafarer II' G-ACJM, unfortunately. The book gives a brief account of both aircraft and I'm happy to send you photocopies of the relevant pages for private study if you want. Please email me privately with your address and I can send you the information. John

Hi John, Sorry I have been so long replying, but I was on holiday. Yes, I would be interested in any info about 'Seafsrer'. However, as I am new to this site, I would not know how to go about obtaining your email address. Further good news is I mailed A.I.M and they told me that the rugrat resin 1/72 kit is on their list for re-issue, although it may be some time off yet. They told me to keep checking hannants website. It is especially good news for me, as I may not need to tackle a 'mod' of the dragon rapide after all. Patrick

Patrick, you have an e mail incoming from me! I hope you had a good holiday.
Great news about the re issue, perhaps if there are a few of us who badger AIM with definite orders (I will go for it, and another Dragonfly) they may bring it on a bit sooner. Then again...
cosmoman offered a cutaway drawing which is probably quite useful, contact him as well. I'm sure he can be helpful to you. This site is about helping each other in different ways; usually with facts or helpful opinions, sometimes with some blatant taking of the p*** and rarely with a bit of a barny just to keep us all on our toes. The natives are generally friendly and the topics wonderfully varied. Enjoy! John

Hi John, Thanks for your comments. I have been a modeller for quite a few years now (when I get the time!!!!). Never been in touch with a modelling forum before. Been a member of IPMS for a year 'til it lapsed, and 'threatened' to join a modelling club, but never got round to it. So, this is new to me, as I have always been 'the Lone Ranger'. Never really been interested in competitions etc. However, I hope this venture will be a success for me. Your comments and help have been very encouraging. Thanks once again. (PS - Never got your email) Patrick

Hi Southsix1, Sorry I did not reply to you on the 18th August. Better late than never. Yes, I did wonder where my post had got too. Still 'feeling my way' around. Quite pleasantly surprised at the number of replies I received on my 'odd' subject. I think I have made the right decision to join a group of people with the same interest as myself. Thanks for your help. Patrick.

Pastrick
I've received 2 magazine articles on converting the DH89 into a DH84. If you'd care to send me an SSAE, I'll be happy to put copies in the post for you. That offer is open to anyone else who would like a copy also.
Regards, Alfie

Hi Alfie, Please accept my humble apologies for not replying to your posting. I would dearly love to have copies of the conversion article. Is the offer still on (nearly 2 months late thanks to me) ? If so, and I apologise for being 'a bit thick', where do I find your address to send the ssae ?
Regards
Patrick
