Hi Guys. Hopefully someone will be able to help me out. I'm unsure as to what colours and type of paint to get to give me a good base from which to start. I've just comeback to model making from many many years ago and the number of ranges and types is quite incredible. Back in my day it was Humbrol and that was it. I even have a few tins left over but their 20 odd years old!
To help narrow it down I'm looking to make mainly WW2 British fighters and bombers in 1/48th scale.
I haven't bought any kits yet (although I really fancy a Mosquito to start with) simply because it's difficult to find what paints are required for each model.
Many thanks.

Nothing wrong with Humbrol, apart from getting a little thinner (or is it me)? I've started using Vallejo acrylics, click on the following link and have browse a through their site: www.acrylicosvallejo.com I use both the airbrush ready range and the brush paints. If you need any further advice, just ask, there's always someone on here willing to give their spin on what they've found. As for kits, well, sorry, I'm not a wingy builder, (ever considered building a truck or anything from the 'Wallace & Gromit' range?) if you ever feel the urge, look through some of the threads in the truck section: ipmsuk.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=tk2 or knock on the door of the loonies room: ipmsuk.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=wg2Oh, my name's Nick, and I'm supposed to be in charge of this mad house, welcome to the forum.

Thanks Nick. I have a look at your link.
I don't think I made myself very clear in my last message. What I need help on is a list of paints that are a good base to start from i.e. black , matt black, white, silver, spitfire green etc etc.
I've looked at numerous model suppliers websites hoping for starter sets but with no luck.
I would also like a airbrush, but again not sure where to start and don't want to spend a fortune to being with.
Finally I've no idea what fillers and masking tape to get either.
In fact I just realised I have no idea, fully stop. Back in the day when I made models before we used putty for filling. Now I'm showing my age!
Thanks
Aaron

Hi Aaron and welcome Vallejo do a number of sets, under their own name as well as in a wargaming guise under the Flames Of War title. Probabaly the best Vallejo set could be the Allied 16 paint set ref 70109 but it dependson how much you want to spend it getting yourself set up: www.acrylicosvallejo.com/Extras/documentacion/CatalogoEstuches.pdfThe Flames Of War Quatermsters set (8 paints) will give you the basics. I got mine from Hobbycraft. Hope that helps Rich

Hmmm Wackyracer lol you are in a pickle.
Maybe first get a kit, this tells you what colours are needed for the said kit.
From there you could find Hannants/Models for sale etc on the Internet, then type in what you are looking for, its fun and you will find more than you bargained for.
Paints now a days are Acrylic Water based which in my view with a spray gun are the best,(my opinion only).
Well there are lots of spray guns available, if you go to a local exhibition and find a stand, you can chat and get a good idea what it is you want. There is a thread on spray painting here, but its the individual choice you have to make.
Humbrol are still good as are Tamiya, but for my choice its got to be water based Acrylics such as Life color and Vallejo same as Nicks.
My advise if your not certain is just get a cheap kit and the instructions will have the paint colours you want for that particular kit.
Hope this helps.

I agree with Foxy, although there are 'kits' with paints in, chances are you will end up with colours you will never use. Best to check with the kit as to the colours needed. I have a tin full of old Humbrol paints, some 30 years old or more and they are still useable! I too use acrylics now, they are safer to spray, easier to clean up. For brush painting though, I find the Tamiya acrylics quite difficult as they dry as you are brushing and go 'sticky', Vallejo are excellent as are the Revell Acrylics for both brush and spray painting.

Something everyone has 'glossed over' so to speak. The state of paints today means undercoats are almost a given and often they are not mentioned . Halfords grey plastic primer is about the best to use for the genre you are addressing as it goes on evenly and can highlight where you need to sand or fill better.
As for paints, Hell yes the range is enormous these days. The advice to get a small cheap kit first and experiment is a good one. I personally find Tamiya paints to be awful and too thin by a fair margin. I would recommend the paint range vended by White ensign if you are brush painting at first. Try to avoid any kits vending the humbrol paints with the kit. You will find yourself buying paint anyway in these. The matter of choice is personal. I would recommend you try a little of each to begin with to see which range you prefer then build from there.

Hi Aaron,
Have a look at Hannants Xtracrylics. They are acrylic based paints that dry quickly and clean up using water (as opposed to enamels that need White Spirit).
For a Mossie you want either Dark Green/Ocean Grey/Medium Sea Grey for an RAF Bomber/Fighter Bomber, PRU Blue for an RAF Photo Recce, Silver for an Aussie Fighter Bomber or Night Black for an RAF Night Fighter.
The interior colour for all is Aircraft Grey/Green.
Can I also recommend the Tamiya Mosquito kit as it goes together very easily!
Cheers,
Rob M.

Once again thanks to everyone who's helped me out.
Yesterday, I visited the RAF museum and the Hannants shop nearby. They were a great help and I came away with the Tamiya Mosquito kit in 1/48th and a range of Xtracrylics for this a hopefully future jobs along with all the other stuff one needs.
This weekend I hope to make a start on my first kit in 25 years!
Aaron
