Bit of a long shot this, but does anybody make a kit of a WW2 Implacable class carrier - HMS Indefatigable in particular - any scale, any medium?
My Grandad (now deceased) served on her in the Pacific towards the end of the war and now my Gran has asked if I could build her a model. I really don't fancy scratchbuilding...
Thanks
Brian

Brian get hold of the lads..and lasses at White ensign. If there is a kit they will know of it and all the relative ref material that goes with it.

Heller do (or did) a 1:400 Illustrious class, and I believe the Implacable class were a modified Illustrious class; similar looking but I think longer. It would need quite a bit of research to verify the differences but the Illustrious kit might be a good starting point, with a fair bit of additional scratch work for the conversion.

Loiner - you are a genius!
Not only do Heller make a 1/400 model of Illustrious but it would be (relatively) easy to modify it to replicate the Indefatigable.
The Indefatigable was longer than the Illustrious (approx 7m) and wider (18cm). As this scales down to 17.5mm and 0.5mm respectively I think I will have a go at modifying the Heller kit.
Local library has ordered a reference book for me (The Illustrious & Implacable classes of aircraft Carrier 1940-1969) whic I hope will point out where the 'plug(s)' need to go. Really makes a nice change to have to do this amount of research rather than making it up as I go along!
Thanks for all the help so far, no doubt I will need more in the weeks/months to come!
Checked out White Ensign's website and they have the kit and a EM set to detail it! All I need is some money...

Struck gold on this one!
Just bought the Heller kit, both White Ensign PEM sets and the resin replacement superstructure for £37 inc P&P from ebay. Just waiting for it to be delivered then i can start the research in earnest ( or in the library as the case may be!)

That's good news. You'll have to keep us updated on progress, I think we'd be interested to see how it goes together, particularly as this is a subject of great interest to any British warship fans.

OK its arrived and, oh my, what a lot of PE and the bits are SOOOOOOO small. I don't known about keeping you informed, I reckon there will be lots of requests for help too.
I have a lot of research to do to identify the differences between the two classes before I start gluing so it is likely to be autumn before I make a real start (might have plucked up the courage by then, too).
As an aside, were can I get aircraft (Seafires, Martlets and Avengers) and crew in 1/400 (WEM have nothing listed on the website)? Or can I get away with using 1/350?
Thanks for the support so far
Brian

Brian L'arsenal - www.larsenal.com/GB/index.php - do a range of 400 scale accessories and also crew figures. I think they have avengers but not seafires and martlets, although trumpeter might do wildcats but they would be 350, probably not a lot of difference in size though. Mike
