Bit of a disaster with the mizzen mast. It sheared off where it goes into the deck whilst I was doing some rigging on it. A few expletives later, I managed to repair it by drilling out the bottom of the mast, and also drilling into the part broken off in the deck, carefully maintaining the mast rake angle to take a piece of 1mm steel wire cut from the long straight section of a paper clip. Epoxy was used to do this repair to fix the wire into the mast and thus into the deck. Of all the masts in the kit this one is the weakest. Would encourage anyone building the kit to saw off the D shape at the bottom of the mast and cement it into the deck flush and let it set off hard. Then do what I did to reinforce the mast to deck fitting by the drillings etc. You will have to ensure the alignment of the reinforced mast as the D shape will be gone! The Vasa modelling saga continues........

Having got over the mizzen mast breakage I proceeded to detail the sails and yards that will be used. I had previously stepped them into the relevant yards. It was easier to fit blocks to each yard off the model following the Stolt drawings and rove thread ropes through them leaving plenty of excess thread for when they are fixed to the model. I had already fitted the lateen sail to the mizzen when the aforementioned setback happened, so quite a bit of untangling of threads when repairing the mast. The other yards fitted with sails and bare yards hopefully will go onto the fore and main mast without too much trouble. The spritsail yards were previous!y fitted and look quite reasonable on the model. Will see how fitting the remaining yards and sails goes.

Hi Lonewolf I am working up an article for the magazine that will include all of my build pictures. Hoping to have the actual model ready for Modelkraft show at Milton Keynes in April with a bit of luck. My submission will be going in as soon as the model is finished. Hopefully it may get into a later issue this year, depending on whether the editor can fit it in or feels that the article will be good enough anyway. I see you play the guitar. Do you play in any group at all or just for your own pleasure? Back in the old days in the 60s I used to play drums in a blues rock group when I took a few years away from model making. Heady days long gone!

A couple more setbacks. Managed to break the foremast off just above one of the Woldings. It was a clean break. As this mast was made from two halves, there was a hollow area in the middle of it. I used this to advantage as I got a 1.5mm drill and used a pin chuck to run down into each broken half. This enabled me to use a 25mm panel pin to fit part way into each whilst refitting the mast together again using epoxy adhesive for strength. The other mishap was a broken spritsail upper yard. Too flimsy to repair so will be replacing with a wooden cocktail stick carved to shape that will probably be stronger anyway. If I build another ship kit I will look at making masts and yards from something much stronger.

At long last the Vasa is now finished. The last things to do will be to check the model over for any little scratches or paint getting worn during the rigging process, odd bits of loose thread etc. It will be going into an elegant custom made display case already built for me by Just Bases. Was it worth all the effort? I think so, as I not only have a very colourful model, but also one that is as near to how the ship appeared when she went down. According to research that was available to me, I found out that she only had four sails bent into the yards on her fateful maiden voyage. Two sails on the modelthe foremast, her mainsail and lateen sail. Both the foremast topgallant and mainmast topgallant were not set and flagstaffs were temporarily substituted. Also the main armament was short of eight cannon. Four from the main gun decks and the four stern chasers. One of her falconer cannons was loose on deck at the time as well. Hope to have the model at the Milton Keynes show Modelkraft in April. Time to get back to nice car model.........Let's see!

Tried to upload a few pics of finished model. Unfortunately had same problem as Ken Anderson. The files were too big. I uploaded a few to the readers picture gallery in Fine Scale Modeler recently so hopefully some views can be made on there soon. I was pleasantly surprised to recently learn that Fred Hocker at the Vasa Museum has been following this thread.

Article submitted to IPMS UK magazine and will be going to print late 2017. I also have one picture that is now up on the Fine Scale Modeler website in the galleries.
