Hi all The latest destroyer for the Royal Navy, the first of the Type 45's, HMS Daring today sailed up the Clyde for it's initial sea trials. Here are a couple of shots of her for those who are interested. This first shot shows her as she emerged from under the Erskine bridge, which dictated when she could sail, as the tides had to be right for her not to clip the bridge, or ground on the river bed. This second shot shows a side view. If anyone is interested, I have more shots which I can e-mail to you. Ted

Any idea what the large Black panel is at the rear of the superstructure. Hanger door? H Ian That is where the lifeboats are located. There would normally be a door there. Indeed, any opening is capable of being sealed as the ship is a stealthy design, and open holes would compromise that ability. It is a narrow place, with one on each side, and the hangar is inbetween those, with the flightdeck on the stern. The 'dalek' is a multi function radar capable (apparently) of detecting a tennis ball sized target at 40 miles according to the BAE literature. This is the heart of the PAAMS system which gives the ship it's anti aircraft primary role. Ted

'The 'dalek' is a multi function radar capable (apparently) of detecting a tennis ball sized target at 40 miles according to the BAE literature.' So it probably won't work then! Anyone remember the Nimrod AEW Cheers, Steve

I do remeber the AEW Nimrod, having done a bit of work on it. the problem there was a too small airframe, and the usual government mobile goal posts, a subject I cannot go into. Some technology was actually used on later Radar systems very successfully.

This is Daring on return from the sea trials. All accounts are that the trials went well. I chose this shot as I think it brings out the lines of the ship rather nicely. Ted

Hi are there any potential enemies out there with subs or aircraft that are as small as a tennis ball or are we looking for things that don't exist. Nope, I cannot think of one weapon as small as that that could possibly present a ship of this size any trouble. I feel it would be a good idea to not go up the Themes on Wimbledon week though or there could be a bloodbath. Regards Paul

Regards Paul You notice there are no seagulls flying around the ship - could be construed as tennis ball sized in cross section - what does it shoot to hit something the size of a tennis ball 40 miles away?? Thats all well and good and very impressive but it says nothing about killer seagulls with tennis balls at 40 miles. I wonder if a seagull can carry a tennis ball? African Seagull certainly can but not so sure about the European unless it grips it by the husk.

If killer seagulls are detected maybe they fire the ships cat at them from a Sea Cat launcher ;D Cheers, Steve

Not what you would call pretty is it...
but so long as it is effective at it's job then that should not matter...
looks like it will be an easy scratch build

I would guess that with cut backs the killer seagulls will be seen off with a bag of seaside fish and chips laced with bicarbonate of soda and the attacking tennis balls, once detected at 40 miles will be despatched by Leading Seaman Becker on the poop deck with his trusty racquet. Dressed in whites of course. This thread getting silly enough yet ;D Paul
