Hello All
Can anyone possibly point me in the direction of a good article/guide on the best ways to create accurate looking sea surfaces?
It's not for me, you understand.... I do the wingy-things. A friends son (just turned 17) has been inspired by the pics of Jim Baumann's SMW winning Mauretania in the latest IPMS Mag. He has a ship model that he was bought as a present a couple of years ago (not sure which ship - he says it has 25 guns...). He's going to dig it out and actually build it but he asked me about 'doing the sea'.
Jim has done a great job of it but doesn't go into details.
I know I've read various things over the years and I can give some very basic advice but if I can provide him with some GOOD information, he may be more successful...
I'm keen to encourage him.

Hi. If it helps out i can take some pictures of the ship displays at the Science Museum for you. Several of the case have warships on view with sea effects so it may be useful. Just let me know.

I use two methods. Firstly, for flat calm, as in harbour, clear resin poured in layers, with colour over the bottom layer and the odd touch of white when finished.
The other method, involving Pollyfilla, was described in 6/96 issue of IPMS Magazine.

Thanks for the prompt replies Ian(s)
Ian S. That would be useful and also interesting to see. I wouldn't want to put you out but thank you. If you can do that, I'm sure others would benefit too.
Ian D I've had a rummage and, amazingly, I've found your article in issue 6/96! Thanks very much for that.

Hi Gr1
It wouldn't put me out as to be totally honest i actually work there. I will take as many as i can of the warships, liner's and the other one's on show and then let you know.
As regards modeling sea types one of our members (Ipms London) has sucessfully used kitchen foil with his resin ship kit's and it look's pretty good i may say.

I'm a bit (!) late on this one, but hopefully this may still be of help to somebody, it's probably the most common question asked about waterline ship modelling. The newly formed IPMS Fine Waterline SIG has recently launched a website with a tips and tricks section which has Jim Baumann's method of creating water. Take a look at www.finewaterline.com, I hope to add much more to this section over the coming weeks now that the pressure to complete stuff for Telford is over! Mike McCabe

Ayup Paul, try this link from the SIG page on the IPMS (UK) web site: www.finewaterline.comMike there's a comma after your link which is causing the problem.

Thanks Nick ,that is some great site, I am soon to start on a Battleship in 1/350 class and this site will be most helpful. Our group have a very good ship modeler and his sea making is very good, I will have a word and see if he has any help to this thread. That is if someone does not come on first with what might be a better or easier way.
