With a son in the fire service who has a birthday shortly before Christmas, I got to thinking what can I give him that would mean something? He's started a collection cabinet of fire memorabilia, I've provided a few items in the past, mainly stuff I've bought just to get his collection going. On a recent visit to my workshop he noticed a catalogue from 'Fire Brigade Models' www.firebrigademodels.net in Sutton, Surrey and sort of dropped a hint that he wouldn't mind some of the figures in his collection. Paul Slade, the owner of Fire Brigade Models is a retired firefighter and a friend and I actually photographed the items for his catalogues, and of course picked up several of his figures over the years. With the birthday looming, I had a look through the stash this evening and came across a figure which is quite appropriate for the time of year ... ... it's a 120mm figure cast in resin, and supplied in four pieces. I've cleaned what little flash there was from the kit and you see it as a test fit. Over the next few days (hopefully), I'll wash the pieces, glue them together and paint them, and with a bit of luck, the completed figure will be ready for December 18th.

Nick, Speaking of intriguing figures, I've always thought this one would make an excellent model (stands outside the Staffordshire Fire and Rescue HQ). Cheers, John

Ayup John, that's a superb statue, I've not seen it before and it links 3 era's of firefighting. The firefighter at the rear is wearing 'Proto' oxygen breathing apparatus and uniform which spans several years from WWII up to the late 70's. The child being carried by the modern firefighter at the front of the piece is in a very similar pose to the child being carried by the Victorian fireman in the original 'Saved' painting which hangs in the main hall at the Fire Services Technical College at Moreton-in-Marsh, the subject of that painting (shown below) is available in the same range as the figure I'm building ...

I managed a couple of hours in the workshop this evening ... .. as you can see, the figure is primed although I've not yet glued the constituent parts together or attached them to the base. Santa's sack and hat have had a quick coat of red acrylic and the hydrant post and plate have had a quick lick of paint. The Fire tunic and leggings are blue / black which I tend to mix as I need it, but I like to paint this in one go so hopefully I'll get time this weekend. As this project seems to be taking shape rather quickly (fingers crossed), I decided to build two figures, one for my son's birthday and one for Christmas, well, it fills his cabinet up quicker and gives him another box to open. I had a look through the box of things to do ... ... and came up with the little chap next to Santa. More on the emergency duo later.

If you look very closely, he's the spitting image of the 'Joker' from 'Batman', I know the sculptor and he's got a sense of humour, he used the same head for several figures.

I see what you mean. They are good though, I had a look at the web site and I am thinking about getting one for a family friend who is in the fire service. The web site doesn't give the cost though. Are they expensive??

Another hour or so in the workshop tonight ... ... the hydrant plate has been finished, and I've made a start on the the white for the fur band on the hat and for the beard. The difference is very subtle but the hat band is white and the beard is white / silver, it looks better close up. Once the tunic is painted I'm sure the difference will be accentuated. The colour of the gloves is a mixture of Humbrol leather and yellow. Hopefully I'll get the chance to continue with the build at the weekend.

I think its the beard, the pose and the Russian style padded jacket.
Looks like he should have a PPSh in his outstretched arm and be shouting "Death to the Fascist invaders" or some such

Into the workshop once again ... ... major movement in painting the tunic and leggings. The colour is achieved by mixing Humbrol 104 (Matt Oxford Blue) with Revell Matt Black, proportions are about 10 - 1, there are now other colours used for fire fighting gear in the UK but this is the colour of the tunic I used to wear and I still have it as a colour sample. There are several reflective strips on the tunic which will be replicated with a mix of gloss silver and white. I've also attempted the facial skin tone using the Vallejo skin colour set. The boots are awaiting a second coat of semi gloss Black. This little project should be glued together and finished over the weekend, then I can get the juices flowing with a little bit of weathering including a sprinkling of 'Woodland Scenics' snow.
