I have some very exciting news with regards to the competition for this year. the competition is moving halls.after many years of being in hall 3 at Telford, the Executive Committee have decided that with the expansion of the show we can move the competition to the new hall which will be adjacent to the entrance. This will give more room for displaying the competition models and with the extra space prevent some of the popular classes being crowded. For further details on this take a look at the proposed layout on the ScaleModel World web site. www.smwshow.com.

Does anyone else find it frustrating about being unable to enter the competition due to only visiting on one day?
Has an additional 'one day' competition for at least some of the classes ever been considered for the many people who only visit on one day?

I suppose its because you'd then have to have 3 competions, with 3 sets of judgeing, because some people will come on Saturday only, some on Sunday only, some both days. It would be a judgeing and logistical nightmare. You have to remember that the judges and stewards also have their own SIG or club tables to man, some are also volunteering for other jobs during the show. My feeling is one show, one comp. Mark

Join a club, some members will probably want to go on Saturday, some on Sunday and may be some on both. So, you go on Saturday, enter your model and enjoy your day. One of the members going on Sunday can pick it up for you (with your trophy obviously) and bring it back! Jobs a good 'un!

some years ago we did have an open competition on the Sunday of the show. it proved to be a logistical nightmare as Mark said with different sets of judges for both competitions. the executive committee did look at this again last year and it found that the logistics of this were not workable with the current levels of volunteers available. it will always be something that we will look at and if the interest is there and the level of volunteer support is appropriate then it may happen. Hi Tony I've just been looking at the new arrangement for the Halls and in particular the new Ludlow Suite which will be the location for the Competition Area. I'm sure this will make a big difference if this has natural lighting as mentioned, and I'm really looking forward to it. Is there a photo of this new building, either inside or out? It would be interesting to see it if you have one.
Now to the point I am writing. Looking at the suggested layout for the competition tables it looks very similar to the standard arrangement of previous years. I am guessing that the thicker width indicates double tables. No problem with this, but I would like to make a suggestion. . .
Would it be possible to have a passage way so that you can get to both sides of the tables? This is fine for the centre rows, but it looks as though the bottom and right side rows on the diagram are up against the wall, or would it be windows. As these tables are double width it makes it very difficult to see models at the back, and even more difficult to photograph them. You only have to be there to see how many people have cameras - and trying to reach over to take your treasured pics can be very hazardous to say the least! - camera straps, coat sleaves etc., etc.
I just think that photography is an important aspect for a lot of modellers and I know myself I have accrued a vast collection over the years which I often refer to for that little bit of inspiration! It is particularly useful to be able to get to both sides of a model for that all important detail.
I notice too, that the single row of tables at the top does not have an exit at the right end. What I mean is, that this could cause congestion with people having to turn around to come back and so be going against the flow. Is that a wall above this row so there are two separate rooms or is it some sort of barrier?
I realise I am only looking at a diagram and it is very difficult to judge space, but I hope you will be able to consider these points. Perhaps reduce the space in the three central aisles and enable room to walk all the way around the outside?
Best wishes for a successful weekend,
David.

I'm not sure how Tony is setting up the competition area this year but having run the competition myself six times, I can comment on that to a degree.
We have a duty to protect the models from damage as far as is practical. Allowing access down the 'inside' of the long sections along the sides of the area isn't really viable because the gangways would of necessity have to be narrow (restricted by a solid wall on one side and a window wall on the other). Making the central aisles narrower will only make the problem of overcrowding at peak times worse and reduces even further the opportunity for photographers to actually find space to take photos. It also increases the risk to the models on display.
We don't want to prevent people taking photos but we have to balance that against the need to run a safe event with minimum gangway widths (to comply with Fire Regs), managing the number of people wanting to view the competition and satisfying our own administrative needs.
2012 also represents a test run for the 50th Anniversary event in 2013. We want to see how the new space works for us and then assess whether we need to make any changes for next year. That may mean using more space next year. It may mean laying it out differently. It may mean any number of permutations - but until it's been tried we won't know for certain.
Regards, John

Thanks for the responses regarding the competition over two days, I see the point being made, and fair enough.
I'm not sure I'd trust my fellow club members to collect the entries on the Sunday in my absence (with all due respect to them, but they are usually too busy throughout the day). The only solution seems to be resorting to entering one day competitions of other local shows. Shame really, but never mind.

Whilst I can fully understand and empathise with the points that one day visitors have brought up about the competition, I have to agree with Tony that a one day competition in addition to the main competition would be a logistical nightmare. To satisfy everybody there would have to be one on each day! For years now SMW has been a 2 day event, and everyone gets plenty of notice of this. The competition is there to showcase the very best in scale modelling over the weekend, and looks like being even better with the use of a new hall with good natural daylight. John Tapsell brought up the subject about the safety of the models being paramount, and this larger area should definitely help protect the models and the display generally.
