Ok folks, we've discussed this topic before several times. You may have noticed that I've not been posting recently, well, not about my builds anyway.
I think I'm suffering from what is loosely called 'Modellers Bloc'? ... if I tell you my particular problem. You may remember several months ago I started a build review for TMW of the newly re-released Krupp Titan. Within a couple of weeks the kit was well on its way to becoming a model. Then I simply hit a wall, I hated the kit, nothing to do with a kit, although it's slightly complicated in places, it's a joy to build. The deadline for issue 187 came and went, then Gaydon then ... well it has progressed, but very slowly. Peter White has quite rightly become very angry, this is the first time I have let Peter down in all the years I've been building for the magazine, I've always had the build and article completed for the deadline.
So what is the problem? ...
Is it the kit? ... the kit is superb and a joy to build.
Is it building to the deadline? ... probably? ... those who regularly build commissions will probably have undergone the feeling of it just has to be done.
So what's the cure? ... for me it will be a decision NOT to build any further commissions in the hope that my own work will start to flow once again, I have so many unfinished projects being put aside to build commissions. So, what are your thoughts folks? ...

Hi Nick, Having built quite a few commission models I can't think of a faster way to lose enthusiasm for modelling. Once the initial pleasure of a new kit has gone, the rest becomes a chore.
The rewards rarely pay for even the research let alone the hours spent building. Eventually resentment sets in and when the kit's finally finished I've been glad to see the back of it. Can't get it out of the house quick enough.
I don't do commissions any more and it's such a relief.
The cure? Do a model you really want to build. Even if it means buying a new kit. Sell something from the stash to pay for it so you don't have to feel guilty. Write about it if you want to but not because you have to. Simples! And good luck too.
Regards Dave

It's happened to me a number of times, and I have always found that building something different to the norm has cured it. Most recently, I just couldn't face building another aircraft. So I decided that I'd try my hand at figures (a subject I'd always shied away from), just to see how it went. Well, I still can't face building aircraft, but I seem to have a nice little collection of figures building up!!

Hi nick , all the advice given is sound , for me when I get this feeling . I revisit a self queen , one started but not completed and give that a fresh looking over . I then find I have a new interest in it . best of luck ian

Nick,
As you know I build very little but 'paying' work.
I just build what I'm sent. Thing is because that's my only modelling it gets done at the steady rate required. Just a little different way of applying myself causes it to be easier.

Hi Nick,
Happened to me about 12 months ago in exactly the same circumstances. Peter asked me to build a series of models based on the 1/72 Corgi die casts. I got through the first one (that was published in TMW) and then totally lost interest in the rest. I ended up sending the diecasts to another modeller to see if they could finish them. Don't think Peter was right chuffed with me, either! I lost complete interest in all the projects I had planned - even my W&G Camper...
My solution - a Fujimi Phantom and an Airfix Tornado. Quickly realised how much I detested building straight from a kit and I'm back to kit bashing and converting diecasts again.
In short, have a break, then something different (difficult with your eclectic tastes in models) and see how you go... Oh, and remember that this is a hobby that is supposed to be FUN!!

Hi Nick it happened to me today , I picked up the W&G Camping build and just sat looking at . No a single thought about completing it . Better luck tomorrow or maybe the day after . Or should I take my own advice and find a self queen . cheers ian

Nick, my answer to this (happens approximately yearly) is to build something fairly quick, and off the wall. Something that will make you chuckle and doesn't reach out to the 'research a model" in you because either it is up to your own imagination, or it is a 'cartoony' and therefore not real, type of model. ;D Perhaps something "Wacky and Fun"? And can also make others smile, rather than critique.

Just spent an hour working on the Krupp Titan. The end in sight and the front has fallen apart and taken some of the paint with it. It will be difficult to paint and match the paintwork already in place so it looks like a bit of weathering will be called for. Ah well, calm down, coffee and try again, it has to be finished this weekend. When the Krupp Titan is finished, sitting waiting for me is this lighthearted build: beyondtheboxsig.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=ptb&action=display&thread=134&page=1
