Hello together,
what colour to paint this tank ?
I'am thinking about Vallejo Model Color 980.
Many thanks in advance.

Hi Roland
Bovington's Independant is certainly a very dark green, so I'd imagine that 980 would be a great place to start.
Are you thinking of doing it as it looks in the museum, or "in theatre"?

The 'Independent' first appeared in 1926 and would have been painted in one of the 'service colour' shades then in use. The Bovington example was/is in Deep Bronze Green BS.224. This is the standard post war colour that just about all of the museum tanks were painted years ago. DBG B.S.24 was the prewar colour that is the same colour as B.S.224, it was renumbered in 1948. DBG 24 did not come into general War Office use until 1935 so 'Independent' is not likely to be that colour. The greens in use pre-1934 varied, so long as the colour was acceptable to War Office then on it went. the term 'service colour' was applied to any colour then in general use. The reciepient of any message or in conversation then would have known which colour was being referred to. No much good to us now. As the photographs of 'Independent' show a fairly dark shade then I suggest Humbrol 86 or 102 may be more suitable on a model. Please note: NEVER EVER take museum examples to be accurately painted either in colour or disruptive patterning. These are simply tarted up to be presentable to the public and prevent corrosion. The Tiger at Bovington is the only exception that I know of and that was via volunteers not staff.
