Hi all, I've been asked to have a little look at our clubs monthly competitions and the way they are judged, having never judged or entered any model I have built into any IPMS event I have very little idea of where to begin, but feel this may help me been a clean sheet I should point out we are ASVC Wombourne IPMS and have around 30 members of which each month about 10 models are entered into the fray, so it's not a huge amount to judge but I feel having two or three people just pick out what the agree is the best model isnt always fair on the people that build. So any guidance you can give me would be appreciated. Adrian

Oooh now there's a subjective issue.
As a member of Lincoln Model Club we have a neat system in place which has worked for years.
There are four competition rounds a year; March (Open), June (Theme), September (Nationals Theme) and December (open). You can enter two models each round apart from the December round which has unlimited entries although only the top two will score in that round. Judges score each model out of 25. You cannot score your own models. Multiplying the scores by four gives a score from 100. An average is taken for each model and this is used to judge the winners of the individual rounds. Your top five scores from the year are added together too make the annual score. Highest annual wins.
At Lincoln this system has been in place for a very long time and apart from the odd occasion has proven very effective in encouraging more completed models on the tables and establishing a level playing field.
Hope this helps.

Our club (IPMS Hornchurch) has a similar approach. We have 4 comp nights, 1 every 3 months. the comp's are split into 4 groups..
Aircraft 1/72 and under
Aircraft 1/48th and above
Armour all scales
Miscellaneous all scales
Club members cast their votes (in secret) placing their top 5 in order over the course of the evening. with votes are counted and the results anounce at the end of the evining... with top two in each recieving a medal... all points are accumalated towards the club trophys... at the end of the year.
Also all models entered over the course of the year (regardles of if they won on the nights) are displayed at the last meeting of the year (the one before our AGM night) where we invite some guest judges to pick a model of the year (plus a second and third)
It is the informal nature that helps ensure each comp night we have plenty on disply... and more often than not the model of the year winner is a model that did not win when it was first entered... it is the fresh eyes of the visiting judges that create these outcomes.
hope that helps
