It seems that Modelzone have gone into administration. The website is now down apart from a statement by the administrators. www.modelzone.co.uk/holding/Hopefully the administrators will be able to salvage something and keep a few stores open ...

The administrators notice was in the Milton Keynes shop window last week although they were still trading. Had a quick look inside, but did not see any price reductions at all. I guess that the administrators are working out what can be salvaged before the next announcement. When these things happen, it does look a bit savage. But you cannot keep on trading and losing money hand over fist. I would surmise that most if not all the shops are in high rental cost locations, what with commercial rates, utilities costs and staff wages it must be difficult to survive. MZ appears to have similarities to Beatties (remember them) being a large group. Looking at it in perspective, we may be losing a number of model shops to go to, but the poor souls who work in the ones that get closed will be losing their livelihood. At least we can get pretty much all that we require from traders at the various model shows up and down the country, and by mai order and the internet.

Its caused by those online retailers who do not pay tax in this country. Modelzone in Brighton are reducing their kits by 20% but no reductins on Scalextrix or Hornby
save Model shops ...don't use Amazone or EBAY.

I've spent more time and money in Modelzone in the last week than I have in the previous year...

I believe that Scalextric and Hornby stock is supplied on a sale or return fixed price basis, as Modelzone don't actually own it they can't drop the prices.
I went on a mini-spree last week, treating myself to 4 new Airfix kits! Still only marginally cheaper than some show traders even when discounted.

Update from the administrators
17 July 2013
The business and assets of Amerang, the wholesaler of toy and hobby trade products, and part of the Modelzone group, the struggling model shop, has been purchased by Ripmax Limited via a newly incorporated company, Pinehurst 104 Limited which will trade under the Amerang name. Ripmax is a competitor in the sector and the sale ensures Amerang continues as a going concern. All remaining 18 staff at Amerang will transfer to the new company.
Richard Hawes, Joint Administrator, commented: “We are delighted to have secured a buyer for Amerang, which continues to be an attractive brand given the strength of its customer and supplier base and its reputation in the market.”
Last week the Administrators announced proposals to implement a store closure programme for Modelzone’s 47 retail stores.
Richard Hawes, Nick Edwards and Rob Harding, partners at Deloitte, the business advisory firm, were appointed Joint Administrators to Modelzone Holdings Limited (Modelzone) and certain of its subsidiaries, including Amerang Limited (Amerang) on 26 June.
