Even including the postage, this price still comes in under that that Hannants have on their website. I think it's also below the limit for importing so no customs charges or VAT to pay.

Hi dave5158. The price is likely to be above what Customs would charge so you may get hit by them or it could get through okay. They say on the little stickers attached to items that it is £18 for normal import from non EU countries or £36 as a gift. I have been stung recently by them as well as Parcelforce all of which cost me some cash.

Hi. I have had a look at the site you linked to and the charge from Customs related to VAT and the clearance charge from Parcelforce for dealing with the items. That was the first two and then VAT due for the ones collected yesterday from the local post office. It's good though that i was able to to have a look at the site as it gives up to date information which will be useful for any future purchases.

Let me put this in perspective. I have just had a Heavy Cruiser(Takao) from Hobby link. The kit cost £69.00 and with the postage; came to £102 pounds. On arriving in the UK I then got charged £15.40 VAT and £8.93 for handling. With some etchings and Brass guns this put the price up considerably. So if you go by the basic price and VAT etc, it is cheaper than buying from home sources, but still an exercise I will be avoiding for the near future. 'Burnt hands'!!!!

I found out today that I was wrong about the VAT-free figure rising. It's just the import duty figure that had risen. My Mogami should be with me (from HLJ) next Tuesday and all I saved was about £3.

I find the trouble is with Ship kits and Sci fi kits is my local model shop does not stock because they don't sell in quantity. In this case I would strongly urge you to use the mail order services of the specialist shops that do support your society in attending the Nationals. I know that sometimes you will find you have paid a few pounds more than you think you would elsewhere but these shops are in the UK and actively supporting our hobby. And no I am not connected in anyway to the shops bar being an ongoing customer. Therefore I want a ship I go to White ensign. I want Sci fi, I go to Comet.

I agree Tim and thats how I go about it now. Does anyone know of a retailer that maybe at SMW that sells Gold medal Model etching products for 1/350 ships, as I am looking for at least four etching types for Japanese and other ships. There a USA based firm.

Give the guys at White ensign a ring before the show and ask them to bring what you need. They are a good and knowledgeable bunch and can advise on which stuff will suit your needs.
