The first meeting of the Derby / Burton model club was held this evening at Leavesley's International, just off the A38 South near Alrewas. In attendance were a mixture of established members of the old Derby & District club, and a few new members. Here's a line-up of the motley crew, standing in front of our toy for the evening, a Hagglund tracked vehicle .. ... L-R, Spike, new members Darren and Kevin, Chadders, new member Tim, Fatty, Woo and Derek. We started the evening with a few introductions, followed by a brief health and safety note from our host Fatty, before adjourning to the playground at the rear of Leavesley's for a bit of fun. First up for a drive was of course Fatty to show us how it's done, crewed by Chadders and Derek ... ... here we see Mark (white knuckles) Chadders in the lookout position, with Derek seemingly making copious notes, or was he just rubbing through the dirt on the roof checking the paint was the proper shade of green? ... flippin military modellers? ... and party animal Chadders once again, doing his impression of a glass slider as fatty checks the brakes. We had an excellent evening, which will hopefully be repeated at subsequent meetings. Next meeting will be the first Friday of July, if you live in the area, why not come and join us? ... Subject for the next meeting is weathering with your's truly providing a few hints and tips.

Just be gald she got it the industry is full of very nasty rumours regarding all the GM subsiduries.
Looks like despite this Canadian backed buy our GM Europe may have less than six months trading left in them and god alone knows what's gonna happen to their Asian brands.

Just to remind everyone that the next meeting of the Derby / Burton Model Club will take place this Friday evening August 7th, at Leavesley International, just off the A38 near Alrewas, Staffordshire. Our first meeting at the new venue was well attended, maybe due to a little toy we had to play with, a Hagglunds. This month, we have another little toy, a mobile x-ray machine, or to be precise, 4 of them, the type that sit at the docks looking through the lorries and vans which pass through the ports on their way in and out of the country. We can't obviously demonstrate how it works, but there's permission to take photos and have a good look around the vehicles, there's also a large range of trucks to photograph. Ian Sadler is our guest this month, he's volunteered to show us how to replicate kit parts from aluminium sheet, or to be more precise, take away cartons. If you've been to the meeting before, you'll know that we're a friendly bunch, there's also coffee on the boil, but just in case there's a shortage, bring your own mug. All modellers welcome, we look forward to meeting you.
As Secretary of the club I'm off down to Leavesley's this afternoon for a sneak preview, all in the role of risk assessment you understand, and the chance to photograph the beasts while I can, before the hoards get there tomorrow night.

We had quite an interesting meeting last night. Ian Sadler came along and shared his skills creating realistic replacement kit parts from aluminium. A quick shot of Ian during his aluminium rubbing ... ... a rabbit in the headlights shot once he realised that I had my camera pointed at him during his demonstration ... ... and in true Blue Peter style, a couple of the items he made earlier ... ... that's a 5 pence piece shown for size comparison against a bucket and spade. For the truck enthusiasts, apart from the usual line of trucks available to photograph, we had this beast in the compound ... ... it's a mobile x-ray unit as used at the dockside at Dover. It's basically a massive folding boom on a crane chassis built by the French company PPM / Terex. When the unit is deployed, the arm unfolds in a massive arc, vehicles are driven past the unit and the operator inside the control room can view what's inside. Ideal for checking cargo for illegal immigrants and drugs. We had a new member, Tim, so Spike treated him to a quick flit around the massive test field at the back of the site. Here's Tim before his test flight ... ... and during with Spike as lookout ... Fatty then decided that he would take his recently prepared 4x4 around the track for a quick dip, and asked Woo if she'd like to accompany him ... ... I don't she was impressed mate. Here's the car shortly after the trip ... ... Fatty sort of neglected to close the window through the splash, and Woo was heard to say that she would instruct him in the art of using the washing machine. After a good couple of hours we had a quick womble around the compound on the way back to the shack, and I noticed siting in the corner ... ... a possible conversion of the Sean the Sheep tractor kit? A superb evening and looking forward to the next one on the first Friday in September, when Spike will hopefully be demonstrating how to use Alclad.
