Looking at building a 1/48th scale model of this Tornado. What kits and decals are available. Cheers

For kits try TAHS, Kingkit or Kitcrazy; they all offer the Airfix kit. There are no other F2/3 kits around and available in 1/48th from any of the main dealers that I can see. For markings go to Hannants and search-they have ooooodles of choices. For any other onfo try Google..... John

Go on then, cosmosman - I'll ask the question... Why that particular Tornado? It doesn't have any real distinguishing features. Is it because you like Volkswagens? Or are you into Vivienne Westwood?

Well, in December 2004 I was sent down to Falklands to survey one of the bars at Mount Pleasant airbase. When we took off to come back to England, 2 Tornado's provided escort from the island for a short while, then returned to base. This is one of them I photographed from our plane. Been trying to find out which squadron they're from.

Here's another picture www.abpic.co.uk/photo/1124435/Decals for a FI F3 www.hannants.co.uk/search/?FULL=ML48154Hope that helps. Alfie

Dragon used to do a 1435 Flight F.3 in 1/144 scale (with the Maltese Cross on the tail). I don't know if it's still available but it's a bit small for you anyway. Other than the decals Alfie mentions, I don't know of any other options. Having said that, I'm wondering about the 'VW' tailcode. Did 1435 Flt use 2 letter tailcodes at some point? Was it a temporary replacement aircraft from another squadron? I have a vague recollection of codes going a bit haywire a few years back - due to the 'rationalisation' of the F3 force - I don't recall which squadron was allocated 'V*' codes. 1435, of course, have famously long used the single letter codes F, H, C and D for their 4 aircraft and the Tornados were no exception....

Thanks for the info guys. Will have a look round for a suitable kit and decals. What's the difference between a squadon and a flight ?

The VW tailcode dates from a few years back when the Tornado F.3s adopted fleet codes rather than squadron codes.
They received codes in the ranges UA to UZ, VZ to VZ, WA to WZ, XA to XZ and YA to YZ. The dual control training aircraft got codes with T in them TA to TZ plus UT, VT, WT, XT and YT. It was also confusing in that they codes ran in reverse serial order. So that VW was ZE291, VX was ZE289 and VY was ZE288. The missing aircraft in the sequence ZE290 was a trainer coded TM.
The system didn't last long - from about 2001 to 2005.

There is another kit, and its better (though not much) than the Airfix kit. Italeri do both F3 and GR1 kits. They are fairly old now, but still better value than the Airfix. However the Airfix kit has far better decals and weapons, and you can tart the italeri one up with Airwaves brass sets and a NeoMega cockpit. Ok so Xtradecal do some pretty good decals as well. And Flightpath do some pretty good update sets for the Tornado if you really want to push the boat out. I did the italeri kits a few years ago now and can vouch for their quality. Simple, basic kits, but lots of scope for extras.

Hi cosmosman.
A Squadron , say 222 Sqn is a whole part, where as a Flight I believe would be a quarter of a Squadron.
But I am thinking on WW II layout.
I am sure some one will put me right on this.
