I'm building an Aermacchi MB326 1/48 by Italia but am not happy with the color advice on the instruction sheet -aluminium(metalizer) for entire aircraft. I have used Tamiya XF-16 through airbrush.
The finished model will be an SAAF Atlas Impala of 5th Squadron, but compared to photos of the real aircraft, it just doesn't look right!
Have tried contacting IPMSSA as one of their members built a beautiful version in 1/72 . Two weeks on though, still no reply.
Also does anyone know why 1/72 Supermodel versions of this kit are so expensive ? I know they are rare but 32 euros on eBay seemed a bit much !

I've just contacted one of our South African members on your behalf, Colin Burgess and informed him of the post.

Hi Japiedog, Firstly my apologies for you not getting a reply from IPMS SA re your query. I think you problem lies with Tamiya XF-16, the 'F' means flat so even if you apply clearcoat over the flat aluminium it is still going to look dull. XF-16 is a dull colour to start with and not correct to represent the finish on the Impalas. The aircraft were very well maintained and the finish is almost polished aluminium. One of our members has build an F-86 Sabre which had a similar finish, I contact him today and get a better reply for you. My initial suggestion would be Modelmaster Buffing polished aluminium.
If you going to use the kit 'Castle' decals, they are incorrect, if you let me have your postal address I'll send you the correct ones. Regrads Colin Burgess IPMS SA National Chairman
PS. Regarding you question of the Supermodel Impala kit and the high price on Ebay is probably due to the fact that only one production batch and therefore a shortage of available kits. However I have just sold on for about 14 UK ponds.

Thanks for he swift reply Colin. Will use the modelmaster color you suggested. Also for the kind offer of decals. My postal address is Keith Ralph, 2 Englishcombe Rise, Bath BA2 2RL Somerset, UK. If your address is different to that on website, please let me know as I would like to pay you, at least for postage !
As you may gather from my username, I'm a homesick SA expat. Currently building a selection of the SAAF craft we used to see in Cape Town. Would the Kfir be ok as a substitute for the Cheetah ?

Hi Keith, No problem with the payment for the decals,it's my pleasure, always good to help a modeller.
If you are interested in the SAAF, you may want to get in touch with Phil Cater over on the SAAF SIG. He's mad about the SAAF and very active, he belongs to the Brampton Branch over near the M1. If Phil can't answer you questions there may be no answer!!
Regarding the Model Master over the Tamiya acrylic, if you have already painted your model best to test on an area which is not too visible as they are spirit based paints and may just react with the Tamiya. I'll try and get the decals into the post tomorrow. Colin

The IPMS South Africa web site would be a good place to start looking for this info. I did a quick search and found this (might be useful) www.arcforums.com/forums/air/index.php?showtopic=168820&st=0&p=1560859entry1560859anthony (former member of IPMS Durban in the 1970's)

Hi Keith. Thanks for the bucks, there really was no need as I was only too glad to help. Re the Bokkie roundels if you contact Phil Cater via the SAAF SIG he should have what you are looking for. Colin
