Hi All, finished my first boat. Simple little kit but quite good fun! Only problem encountered was the vague decal placement instructions that would have you put 2 extra depth indicators on the starbord side of the fin when they should be on sides of the hull! Now starting a Hobbyboss Kilo Class Boat to keep it company. Cheers, Rob

Actually looks a nice kit. Was worried that a sub in 1/350th would be a bit tiny but it doesn't appear to be. Looks like Airfix might make another sale.

Hi Rob, Nice job, I ,ve seen a couple of these done now and since these subs have paid my mortgage for many years I I will probably have a go at one soon. Just some basic accuracy pointers for anyone else thinking of doing one: The only markings any RN subs carry are white plimsoll line markings for and aft. Mainly for trimming the boat in dock rather than at sea. There are temporary tape markers applied for sea trials etc when in build, but nothing else. They never carry markings of any kind on the deck. Just aft of the bridge fin there is a fairing on the hull sides. These were back fitted at build on the later boats. I think trenchant was the first to get them. All of the class now have propulsors. Airfix seem to have made the same mistake as WEM did on their T Class kit regarding the bow. The under bow is faired smooth when the boat is in service. The "bumper" effect on the bow is modelled on the temporary fairing that is fitted when these boats used to be dynamically launched. This was bulkier than the "in service" fairing because it was likely to be bumped by tugs immediately after launch. There is very little non conformity in the hull shape when the final covering is fitted. As for painting, all RN subs are black. However they are tiled, and these are "scrubbed" clean when the boat is in dock, so the detergent that gets left on them dries slightly white, so in this scale a good replication of this would be a dark grey. Different to the Vanguard class of sub, which are tiled all over, the T class have areas which are just painted, these are generally where Airfix have applied detail to the hull sides. The deck where the non slip coating is applied would be black without question, this is kept in good condition for obvious reasons. A very good effort from Airfix. Looks stunning next to Bronco,s very accurate Vanguard kit (how DID the Chinese get the detail to do the definitive kit of this boat? )

Another problem that seemed to plague the the Trafalgar Class was the loss of many tiles. I think that the appearance of this is what modellers may need to consider when simulating the tile effect. At least I have many photos of Astute, on the shiplift, for when HobbyBoss's kit turns up. It's a good time for getting Barrow-built boats in kit form. www.hobbyboss.com/83509.htm
