This is a question I've asked elsewhere but without any success so I'll try again. Basically I would like to know what colours to use for blade aerials, mainly in respect of RAF aircraft but also USAF as well.
I've seen black aerials, white aerials, cream aerials, black aerials with white horizontal stripes and thats the RAF. The USAF seem to be more inclined to use the camouflage colour for that location . Some maybe indicate UHF, some may be VHF. Sometimes there is one of each colour on both the top and bottom of a fuselage in order to give 100% coverage rather than just the upper or lower hemisphere.
There must be a definitive list of 'appropriate' colours for aerials but does anyone know what it says?
Thanks in anticipation!
Simon

Hi Simon. Just browsing after a long absence on the forum when I saw your request for info. Perhaps I can help regarding RAF Aerials. The basic colours you mention (plus Silver/Aluminium) are correct. The colour is determined by the manufacturer (e.g. Chelton, Rayethon) of the particular aerial. All aerials on military aircraft are constructed to a defence standard, this usually takes into account the manufacturer's recommendation for optimium performance. The surface finish has to provide erosion & weather protection and radar/radio wave transparency for the particular system it is connected to. Some aerials have a neoprene erosion strip on the leading edge, this is invariably black. The position of the aerial is determined as the best to give effective transmission/reception and the least interference with other systems on the airframe. Hope this helps. Dave.
