I have searched all over and I have yet to find help on how to split a canopy. I am building an me 262 (1/72) after 30 years away from modelling. I dont want to buy a vac form replacement as this is my first kit in 30 in years. I bought a detailed cocpit i.e intrument panel, seat etc. There are lots of videos on how to make and mould you own canopy. Surely with a littly care one can convert a closed canopy into an open one?
Any help would be great
many thanks

Hi Sean, I'm sure there are plenty of folks on this site more qualified than me to answer so if you get a reply that sounds easier or safer, take heed! For separating any plastic transparency, I've always used a razor saw. These days there are lots of p/e blades which have a very fine tooth pitch and are nice and thin. Saw very gently along the joint line between the frames and avoid any twisting as the clear parts are more brittle than the rest of the plastic in the kit. When you've separated the canopy, very carefully trim the burrs left from sawing with a sharp scalpel such as a No. 11. You can also thin the inside edges down a bit with this blade. If you're careful, the thinned edge will be behind the framing so you won't see any marks on the outside. Just take care with the saw and scalpel!! When you're happy with what you've got, it'll be a help to clean and polish it then dunk it in Klear which will improve the clarity and hide any minor scratches. Hope that helps a bit. Regards Dave

Thank's. Fastcat. I am trying find someone in the USA who I can get to send me some Future shine. Walmart will not deliver to the UK and I believe the new Klear in the UK has a wax residue

Hi Sean, There's all sorts of stories about the new Klear and some are probably true! I can't say as I've never had to compare them. I mostly model cars these days and I've used the old Klear many times, it's really great stuff. It's quite possible that there's still some of the old stuff around. I got some last year from a local hardware shop, you know, one of those old-fashioned kind with loads of bits and pieces stashed in every corner. Have a good look around the forums before you go the hard way. There seems to be a number of conflicting opinions. Best of luck Dave

I've got some of the new formula Klear but have not used it yet as I still have a fair bit of the old stuff. Karl Robinson has used the 'new' Klear and told me that it is good for gloss coating, but doesn't have the same ability as 'old' Klear when used as a decal setting solution. Interestingly the new Humbrol Decalfix smells very much like Klear.
