I'm with those who accept all genres. But then, I think everything in my mind is real...........wibble, wibble.

Deegee, you were not mistaken. There were a lot more Civilian Vehicles on the table than ever before. I hope that this will be an encouraging trend and we will see even more at SMW2013.

That has to be the most childish, puerile, rediculous statement I have EVER had the misfortune to read. This is the International PLASTIC Modellers Sociaty. Any model made of plastic has the right to win the award as best of show. We have sci fi SIGs, what if SIGS, are you seriously trying to tell me that those people who enjoy making those models don't have a right to enter the competion because they might win!!! If you thought "scale modelling was all about reproducing miniature versions of things that actually existed", then I'm afraid you are sadly mistaken. ALL modelling has to be a scale of some sort, even if that "scale is in the mind of the builder, it's still got to have scale. I suppose you think the Homer Simpson models on display weren't scale models, or the fantastic works of the Beyond The Box SIG weren't scale models. How rediculous. May we assume that he struck a nerve there then Mark. THC Do ya think, lol

If a model fits the rules of its class then its fair game.
If that model then wins its class, it goes through to be voted on for best of show. Simples as alexander says.
I do think its very petty to say we should be building scale miniatures of the real thing thing. This would basically mean that the whole sci-fi section should be removed, are you advocating that?? Also no Luft 46 models even though they are plastic kits? no models of blueprint only aircraft? Where do you draw the line?
IPMS is about embracing all aspects of the hobby, if it were to stop doing that then I certainly would cease to be a member.
As to the model in question not my cup of tea but still a d**n fine model.

Hi,
I thought it was fantastic model and I tip my hat to its builder. What if I were to enter a model of a car that was thought of, and may even exist in the drawing stage, but not yet made? It, of course, would still be a scale model and to say this model shouldn't have won because it is not a replica of a real item is short-sighted. Are the 1/4 models that manufacturers used to make of cars while they were designing cars models? Of course!
I enjoy sci-fi books and movies but do not have the skill set to build amazing sci-fi models like those at the show and enjoy seeing such models when I go to shows.
My congratulations to the winner!!
Cheers,

what do you mean Wallace and Gromit isnt real? the way i see it is that if you enjoyed building it and your proud enough to enter it into a competition, then you deserve every right to win best in show no matter what it is....

As I understand it the competition is about modelling skills, and there were plenty of those in evidence, both in the competition and in the main halls.

Best in show not a scale model? Well of course it is, the little (?) lassie was well in scale with her bike, the diorama aspect worked and the skill shown was outstanding. Tskk tskk, the society isnt IPScaleMS after all I may be new around here on this interweb thingy but I was very much around during the eighties and pesonally I find filling plastic models with lumps of metal far more irksome But hey that is the way of it nowadays and if I were to query any judging decisions it would not be this one This is a superb example of why International Plastic Modelling Society nurtures the very best scale modellers in any genre. If it is a great model it gets the accolades it deserves It did b

Was yon Terry in the way Harriet? Have to admit I didnt spend as long peering at its accuracy myself as some did I was more taken with the wingy airythingy models myself, but that doesn't take away the skill used on the monocycle See you at Nth Somers next year, or maybe Brooklands on the first of the year? bill

It is surprising how old habits die hard. I kept hearing the winner of the Best of Show being referred to as 'National Champion'. In view of what was our old IPMS UK Nationals developing over the years into a truly remarkable international modelling event, maybe the title National Champion should quietly be dropped, and renamed Scale Modelworld Champion. It would be a bit more reflective of the new status of the event being the worlds largest model show and competition. Hopefully 2013 will see an influx of competitors from the Americas as it is our 50th anniversary. IPMS USA will be following on by celebrating their 50th in 2014.

It was/is a great model and is very representative of the style of painting that is becoming more prevalent throughout Europe.
Well done, a worthy winner.
