Hello all. I have been a member of the forum for some time but have only now found time to introduce myself. The recent changes prompted me to have a go.
I joined The British Plastic Modellers Society in 1964 when it had been in existence for about 10 months. We met in St Marks Church Hall off Oxford Street opposite Selfridges. Leading lights that I remember were Bob Jones, the editor of the newsletter, and Bill Matthews (can't remember his role at the time). I know he was connected with the Maples store as we held the National Championships there on at least one occasion on a Saturday afternoon in the restaurant, with a superb buffet.
I was 17 at the time and tireless; I would often be up until 2am the night before a meeting completing a model. Also I would be one of the last to leave the meeting as I was so keen and catch the last train home to Crawley where I still live. On one occasion I missed it and spent the night on Victoria Station (try doing that today) and of course there were no mobile phones.
Fifty years later I am older but no wiser. I am still a member, Secretary and Treasurer of the Mid Sussex branch and an inveterate show attendee (I have never missed Telford, but then I'm not alone in that). I have had many model making interests over the years; currently I make small scale British military vehicles and airliners in 1/144 scale. Like many I have many more kits than I will ever build unless I live another 50 years and see the Society's centenary.
So that's me.
